Chief Curator

to start on February 1st 2017

Founded in 1985, the Musée de l’Elysée is one of the largest museums entirely devoted to photography. The Musée has organized many landmark exhibitions within its walls and abroad (with 142 exhibitions in Lausanne since the museum opened in 1985 and 113 exhibitions across the world since 2010). With its publications, events and the Prix Elysée, it has helped introduce a very wide public to traditional and contemporary photography.

The Musée’s collections include over a million phototypes and several photographic collections, notably those of René Burri, Charles Chaplin, Nicolas Bouvier, and Ella Maillart. The Musée also has a very large library of photographic books (20,000 works) currently being digitized.

With the project “Plateforme10”, the Musée de l’Elysée is to become part of the innovative museum complex by 2021. The complex will cover 22,000m2 next to Lausanne Station and will also house the Museum of Fine Arts (mcb-a) and the Museum of Design (mudac).

Your main missions will be to:

  • Supervise and run the museum’s team of curators
  • Plan and put on exhibitions
  • With Senior Management, plan the museum’s positioning and actively participate in its local and international influence and outreach
  • With the curator responsible for collections, define restoration and research priorities
  • Study the collections, and define and lead scientific research projects
  • Actively participate in establishing and implementing a 5-year action plan to transfer the Musée’s activities to the future “Plateforme10” museum
  • Manage the “Pôle Livres” and showcase this heritage with publications, exhibitions and innovative projects
  • Plan an acquisition strategy
  • As a member of the Executive Committee, you will be responsible for the administration of the Foundation

We are looking for someone with:

  • A Master’s degree in Art History, specializing in the history of photography
  • At least 10 years’ experience as a curator in a cultural institution linked to photography
  • Experience in managing major projects
  • Museology skills
  • Editorial skills
  • Sound understanding of digitization, dematerialization and digital platforms
  • Impressive organizational and interpersonal skills; our ideal candidate will also be dynamic, self-directed and a driving force behind proposals
  • Excellent French and English, sound German
  • Experience in managing teams
