The Baltimore Museum of Art Announces Appointment of Kevin Tervala as Chief Curator

The Baltimore Museum of Art (BMA) is excited to announce the appointment of Kevin Tervala as its new Chief Curator. The museum concluded its nine-month search by selecting Tervala, a respected scholar of African art and material culture. He steps into this role after serving as the BMA’s Interim Chief Curator since February 2023.

Tervala’s Journey to Leadership

Kevin Tervala’s journey at the BMA began in 2017 when he became the Department Head for the Arts of Africa, the Americas, Asia, and the Pacific Islands (AAAPI). During his tenure, Tervala has been instrumental in shaping the museum’s direction. His achievements include developing a new collections roadmap, enhancing policies on repatriation and ethical collections management, and fostering deeper connections with academic institutions. Tervala’s dedication to diversifying the voices and experiences in the museum’s galleries is notable. He is especially renowned for reimagining the presentation of the African art collection and establishing the first Oceanic art gallery at the BMA.

Exhibitions and Achievements

Tervala’s curatorial prowess is evident in several acclaimed exhibitions. These include “The Matter of Bark Cloth” (2023), “A Perfect Power: Motherhood and African Art” (2020), and “Kuba: Fabric of an Empire” (2019). His approach emphasizes historical and socio-political narratives alongside a wide range of artistic expression.

Collaborative Vision for the Future

In his new role, Tervala will collaborate closely with Asma Naeem, the BMA’s recently appointed Director. Together, they aim to drive the museum’s curatorial vision with a focus on artistic excellence, diversity, and community engagement. Under Naeem’s leadership, the BMA is poised to present art from diverse cultures and geographies, moving beyond traditional European and American perspectives.

Deepening Community Ties

Tervala, a Baltimore native, has been recognized for his collaborative and open approach. His previous work at the BMA has established him as a key figure in integrating the museum with Baltimore’s social and cultural landscape. His immediate start in the new role marks a commitment to strengthening ties with local artists, cultural leaders, and academic institutions.

Leadership Praise for Tervala

Asma Naeem, the BMA’s Director, praised Tervala’s significant contributions to the museum. “Kevin has been essential in diversifying our collection and presentations. His unique vision and active support have been invaluable. We’re thrilled to have him lead us into a new chapter, with his expertise in non-western art and culture and his commitment to partnership,” she said.

The BMA looks forward to an innovative and expansive future under Kevin Tervala’s leadership, with continued focus on bringing groundbreaking exhibitions and programs to the community.
