The course With a unique, interdisciplinary approach, MA/MFA Curating at UWE is re-defining the curatorial across the visual and performing arts, museums, archives and heritage sites, photography, film, design, architecture, social practice and healthcare. You will gain unique access to professional experience and mentorship in the South West’s vibrant cultural sector.
The varied academic programme provides a lively and essential theoretical grounding to contemporary curating. Visiting speakers and field trips ensure you hear from a range of voices from different contexts and cultural landscapes. As a student in Bristol you will be based in one of the UK’s most progressive, creative and culturally rich cities.
The course is led by UWE Senior Lecturer, curator and writer Dr Marianne Mulvey. She has taught curating at various HE Institutions nationally and internationally including The Royal College of Art, University of Westminster, and University of the Arts, London. Marianne draws on twenty years’ experience of working in museums, galleries and the cultural sector including as Curator, Public Programmes, Tate; Trustee of Fierce Festival, Birmingham; Acquisitions Coordinator for the Arts Council Collection, Hayward Gallery, Southbank Centre; Curator in Residence at Helsinki International Artists’ Programme (2016) and at The Feminist Library, Hobart, Tasmania, Australia (2018). Her doctoral thesis ‘Becoming Public(s): Practising the Public Programme in the Contemporary Art Institution’ reflects on public programming in a global art museum and its challenges, and these research interests feed into the classroom.
Applications are open now for our January 2023 start. The course runs for a year, concluding in December 2023. Recent UWE graduates are entitled to fees discount.
