Assistant Curator of Contemporary Art (Mellon Curatorial Fellow)
The Asian Art Museum has created an exciting vision for the next decade. With support from the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, the museum is embarking on a major collection gallery reinstallation and new interpretive approach.
The museum is seeking a talented, creative, and motivated individual to guide the contemporary art program. This two year Mellon Fellowship will enable a contemporary art specialist to join a high performing curatorial team, gain valuable experience in a broad range of curatorial activities, while playing a key role in the museum’s transformation. Based on the curator’s accomplishments in the fellowship, the museum will consider continued employment beyond two years.
Under supervision of the Deputy Director, Art & Programs, the Assistant Curator will assist in the planning, development, and implementation of a vibrant, dynamic contemporary art program. S/he will assist with the reinstallation of the collection galleries, while establishing and maintaining relationships with a wide variety of scholars, artists, critics, collectors, dealers, and representatives of other institutions to advance the museum’s position as a leader in presenting contemporary Asian art.
The Assistant Curator will organize smaller, less complex exhibitions and assist guest curators in the organization of larger exhibitions; assist in planning and organizing educational programs in conjunction with Education department staff; lecture on contemporary art and provide training for docents as required; write catalogue entries and essays; investigate and make recommendations with regard to potential donations of works of art; assist with the cultivation of donors and preparation of grant proposals.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
- MA in Art History; recent PhD preferred; must include demonstrated record of academic achievement
- Professional work experience in a museum or related educational/research organization with record of achievement; or an equivalent combination of education, experience, and training
- Strong knowledge of Asian contemporary art as well as worldwide contemporary art. Knowledge of traditional Asian art is highly desirable
- Excellent interpersonal skills; strong oral communication skills and public speaking abilities; high level of administrative, organizational, planning, and research skills; capacity and initiative to recommend solutions and solve problems
- Superb writing skills; ability to write effectively for both general and scholarly audiences
- Creative, resourceful, and flexible; desire and ability to think differently; ability to successfully multi-task, managing multiple projects simultaneously
- Ability to work collaboratively on projects with internal and external teams and other curatorial staff, and members of the Conservation, Museum Services, Education & Public Programs, Marketing, and PR staff
- Ability to establish and maintain positive, effective working relationships with artists, collectors, donors, visitors, volunteers, and colleagues outside the museum
- Computer proficiency in MS Office Suite
- Willing to work flexible schedule including evenings and weekends when necessary
COMPENSATION
$1,962-$2,356 biweekly (annualized equivalent of $51,002-61,256)* with an excellent benefits package
