Faculty Position in Curatorial Practice

The School of Art, Design and Media (ADM) at Nanyang Technological University, Singapore, invites qualified academics / professionals to apply for a faculty position as Assistant or Associate Professor in Curatorial Practice.
ADM is currently developing a teaching and research focus in Curatorial Practice, with a focus on contemporary art in all its media formats such as time based and performance art, art in public spaces, festivals and non-art institutional contexts, and broader conceptions of curating such as art programming.
Curatorial practice has come to play an increasingly vital role in the representation and interpretation of art. Accordingly, the successful applicant will be expected to teach and conduct research in an interdisciplinary mode, and provide the leadership to develop transcultural and global collaborations for teaching and research in this area. The successful candidate should possess the professional skills and depth of knowledge required to engage students in the relevant discourses and thinking key to the practice of curating. Based on a clear vision of the potential and challenges associated with curatorial practice, and in response to developments in the field and the activities of professionals working across a diverse range of curatorial and art-related disciplines, the successful candidate should demonstrate the ability to prepare students with diverse backgrounds and interests to be equipped with the skills needed for the challenges and various opportunities which will be needed in Singapore, the region and beyond in the near future.
The successful candidate will teach in the domain of Curatorial Practice, and introduce new courses in their area(s) of specialization. These might include, for example: curatorial strategies, professional curatorial practice, contemporary art, theory and writing, visual cultures and art in public spaces. It is expected that the professor will build collaborative links with the artistic community, the curatorial profession, and broader art and design communities (i.e. museums, contemporary art organisations, biennales and festivals) of national and international significance. The successful candidate will be expected to provide leadership and foster excellence in all academic activities and maintain an active professional practice.
In 2013, with the support of the Singapore Economic Development Board, NTU established the Centre for Contemporary Art Singapore (NTU CCA Singapore). The successful candidate is expected to play a central role in driving the NTU CCA Singapore’s research agenda that has a focus on “Spaces of the Curatorial” and “Curating the City”.
Qualifications:
A PhD degree (or other terminal degree / relevant experience) as well as a strong record of university level teaching, research, curating, supervision and/or publishing, are preferred. Knowledge of experience of Contemporary Art in Southeast Asia and its art spaces is a strong plus.

The successful candidate should be able to engage students historically, socially, and conceptually and inspire imaginative, critical and interdisciplinary reflection across theory and practice. ADM provides excellent opportunities for funded research and the successful candidate is expected to maintain an active research profile, as well as a commitment to teaching and service at undergraduate and graduate levels. This position will also involve administrative duties and committee participation. The school currently offers 6 BFA degrees and an MA and PhD by research. ADM is a school under the College of Humanities, Arts, and Social Sciences at NTU. It works closely with NTU CCA Singapore and together plans to introduce a new interdisciplinary programme in Curatorial Practice to address the needs of Singapore and the region.
ADM is the first comprehensive art school in Singapore. It provides a studio-based professional education in a comprehensive university setting, providing students with the knowledge and skills to develop, and produce groundbreaking creative artworks and related scholarly activity. ADM also promotes Singapore’s creative culture and identity, and is positioned to play a central role in the transformation of Singapore into a regional centre of art, art history, media and design.
The NTU Centre for Contemporary Art Singapore (NTU CCA Singapore), opened in October 2013, is a national research centre of Nanyang Technological University developed with support from the Economic Development Board, Singapore. Located in Gillman Barracks alongside a cluster of international galleries, NTU CCA Singapore led by Founding Director, Professor Ute Meta Bauer takes a holistic approach towards art and culture, intertwining its three platforms: exhibitions, residencies, research & education. NTU CCA Singapore positions itself as a centre for critical discourse and experimental practices for Singapore, the region and beyond. It aims to play an active role within the local art scene, and contribute to the development of regional and international art infrastructures.
