CUE Curatorial Project: Call for Proposals

Deadline:  All applications must be submitted no later than wednesday, may 30th, 6pm eastern time

CUE is launching a new open call program, the CUE Curatorial Project. This program provides one deserving curator the time and resources to realize an innovative project, with the further aim of encouraging curatorial research in tandem with exhibition planning. CUE will provide institutional guidance and resources to the curator, contributing their expertise and professional connections to assist in creating a highly successful exhibition. The program will culminate in a group exhibition with related public programming in CUE’s space with an accompanying exhibition catalogue.

The curator is selected through an open application process, and candidates must submit a comprehensive proposal for a group exhibition to be realized at CUE.

The selected applicant receive a $1000 honorarium and a maximum exhibition/production budget of $2500. CUE will contribute up to $1500 toward shipping expenses and up to $4000 for catalogue production.

Please note that the application fee is used to subsidize both the costs of web hosting the call and the jurying process.

Proposals should be limited to the following:

1. Proposals must be conceptually rigorous and focus on artists, projects, and themes that are innovative, challenging, and engaging. The majority of the artists proposed in the project must qualify as under-recognized, meaning no commercial gallery representation and no solo exhibitions in a commercial venue in the last 10 years.
2. Extra consideration will be given to proposals that clearly demonstrate a unique and creative approach to both the research methods and exhibition plan, and that present ideas or topics that are not well represented by the commercial sector.
3. The proposal must investigate and promote the activities of four or more artists.
4. Extra consideration will be given to those applicants beginning their career as a curator.
5. The applicant must reside in the New York City metropolitan area, or be capable of making living arrangements in the area for the duration of the program. The selected curator will be required to attend a minimum of three meetings with CUE staff to discuss deadlines, objectives and obstacles related to the exhibition.
6. Proposals must include both a draft line-item budget and list of potential artists with images.
7. CUE welcomes proposals that contribute to our on-going commitment to diversity.

A panel consisting of three CUE Curatorial Advisory Council members and two other arts professionals will select the winning proposal. All proposals will be evaluated on merit of project, singularity of concept, and adherence to aforementioned criteria. The selected curator will receive an exhibition budget, an honorarium, and a stipend, in addition to one-on-one guidance from CUE’s staff and network of contacts.

What to submit:

1. An exhibition proposal up to 1,000 words that outlines both the background and plan for the exhibition.
2. A list of at least four potential artists — first name, last name, primary media and primary location.
3. At least one image per artist (maximum of 20 images). Each image must be jpeg format and with the artist’s last name as filename. For multiple images by one artist, filenames should read artist’s last name, then numbered sequentially (i.e. Smith1, Smith2, Smith3…etc).
4. An image list: Please list each image in numerical order in the following format: File Name, Artist Name, Title of Work, Date, Media, Dimensions. You may include a brief description up to 50 words per image either in lieu of, or in addition to the artwork information.
4. A personal curriculum vitae.
