CURATOR
DEPARTMENT: CURATORIAL
REPORTS TO: EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR/CHIEF CURATOR
SUMMARY:
The Curator will work closely with the Executive Director/Chief Curator on the organization of various large-scale monographic and thematic exhibitions from concept to installation. The Curator will also independently organize some exhibitions and artist projects, and to contribute to acquisitions and collection displays.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES:
Reporting to the Chief Curator/Executive Director, the Curator major responsibilities include:
- Develop and implement of long-term and changing exhibitions with independently or with Chief Curator/Guest Curators
- Manage and execute research, writing and oversight of design and production of various publications
- Write didactic and PR texts for exhibitions, with the possibility for contributions to catalogues
- Working closely with artists, and their studios and galleries on upcoming exhibitions and projects
- Work with Education Department with docent training and development of public/educational programming
- Manage off-site and outdoor art projects (Walgreens etc.)
- Negotiation of loans; Communicating with lenders and participants in loan shows
- Overseeing student interns, and working with Education to train docents
- Giving talks and tours for Educational and Public programs
- Extensive travel for exhibition and professional development
- Represent the museum in fundraising and social events on and offsite
MANAGERIAL & ADMINISTRATIVE RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Oversee Exhibitions and Curatorial Project Manager, Chief Preparator, and Registrar of Exhibitions and Collections in all logistical planning and installation of exhibitions, as well as seasonal student interns
- Develop, track and implement annual exhibitions and collections budget of $700,000, and working closely with the Deputy Director, manage grants reporting related to certain aspects of this budget
- Answer routine correspondence, public and scholarly inquiries
OTHER DUTIES:
- Collaborate with Development department on grant applications and management of awarded grants
- Work with Education to train docents
- Act as liaison for the Chief Curator in addition to working independently with other curatorial staff and departments in the museum, including Collections, Education, Communications, Operations, and Development, as well as external contacts such as artists, donors, galleries, and other institutions.
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
- Wide knowledge of and enthusiasm about contemporary art
- 5+ years of curatorial experience with a record of increasing professional responsibility and measurable accomplishments
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English
- Strong organizational, planning and research skills
- Ability to work independently and self-directed, exercise creative problem-solving, initiative and good judgment to successfully organize and complete assignments
- Detail-oriented, meticulous, and conscientious in following through on assigned tasks
- Knowledge of condition reporting and collection care methods and procedures
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with staff, artists, visitors, and community members
DESIRED SKILLS
- Written and verbal communication skills in Spanish
- Bachelor’s degree in a related field (e.g., art history, studio art, etc.)
- At least 3 years of work experience in a comparable field such as a gallery, museum, arts non-profit, private collection, etc
- Working knowledge of collections management systems
