Curator – Learning
Job Description
Reporting to the Director of Curatorial Programme Management and the Executive Director and Chief Curator, the Curator of Learning is responsible for:
- working closely with curators, artists, and designers to curate and create unique learning programmes for the public in and outside of CHAT, as well as on digital platforms
- implementing and moderating learning programmes and preparing resources that are suitable for a wide range of visitors and group tours for the wider public;
- manage and be able to deliver tours to a wide range of parties including but not exclusive to the public, schools, other NGOs and corporate entities;
- conducting training for docents, art facilitators and volunteers to ensure learning programmes are delivered accurately with consistent quality;
- maintain genuine community with docents, art facilitators and volunteers;
- arrange trainings for internal staff to learn about education, interpretation and other museum pedagogical practices;
- building and maintaining good relationship with universities, schools, NGOs, cultural institutions, other pillars of The Mills, former workers and other stakeholders to develop and offer CHAT’s learning and public programmes;
- implementing and executing regular evaluation system of learning programmes;
- conducting research and be in constant dialogue with other curators to achieve a synergetic goal with curatorial programmes including exhibitions, learning programmes, workshops in heritage and contemporary art history;
- maintaining, activating and renewing regular programmes to maintain public interest of textile heritage;
- management of project timeline and adherence of approved budget according to internal administrative procedure;
- participating in curatorial discussions in updating exhibitions in coming years;
- writing essays for exhibition catalogues, captions, work descriptions, wall texts and blurbs for PR materials as well as relevant printed materials;
- liaising and coordinating with both internal and external parties on learning programme operations; and
- performing other ad hoc duties.
Qualifications and Attributes
- Master’s Degree in museum education, museum studies, fine arts, art history, cultural management or related disciplines, or with proven experience in research, curatorial programmes or relevant projects
- At least 8 years of relevant experience in cultural institutions
- Strong interest in CHAT’s interdisciplinary mission and programmes connecting heritage, arts and textile
- Well-versed in international methods of museum education and interpretation pedagogy
- Strong interest in digital learning experiences within the museum context
- Strong administrative skills
- Solid experience in collaborating with schools, universities and NGOs.
- Solid understanding of curricular systems of the various schools in Hong Kong
- Passionate about working for an arts and cultural organisation to realise curatorial ideas into dynamic exhibitions and learning content
- Experience of interest in hands-on making preferred
- Excellent verbal and writing skill in both English and Chinese (Cantonese and/or Putonghua)
- Enthusiastic, proactive with creative energy and self-initiative
- People-oriented and a strong team player
- Flexible and willing to work overtime and weekends at times, especially during peak seasons in preparation for exhibition openings
