Curator (Maternity Cover)

Department: Visual Arts
Grade E
Salary: £42,050 – £47,530 per annum, inclusive of Inner London Weighting (dependent on skills and experience)
Job Type: FTC of up to 12 months (maternity cover to begin in late January 2023), Full Time (35 hours p/w with a possibility of flexible working hours after 9 months).

We are planning a major thematic exhibition focused on the subversive, political and transformative potential of artists working with textiles, fibre and thread, due to open in spring 2024. The exhibition will be international in scope, structured with transcultural and intergenerational dialogues, with work spanning from the 1960s to the present. The exhibition is co-curated with an international museum, where the exhibition will be presented after the Barbican showing. We are looking for a Curator to provide maternity cover and then to work alongside the Barbican Curator on their return from maternity leave until the exhibition opens.  We are ideally looking for a Curator with a good knowledge of international contemporary art and artists working with textiles, fibre and thread.

Barbican Visual Arts produces exhibitions, solo artist commissions and a public events programme encompassing contemporary and modern art, design, architecture, performance, film and photography, and collaborates with international partners on an exhibition partnership programme.

This role will be specifically covering a key period of 12 months, developing and delivering a major thematic exhibition. The role will focus on continuing to develop and contribute to the creative vision of the project set out by the current Curator and the co-Curator from the partner institution, working in close collaboration with the partner institution. Curatorial work will involve an active role in finalising the checklist and finessing the existing structure of the exhibition, requesting loans, planning, writing interpretation, editorial work on the publication and conceiving a public programme. The role will also focus on the realisation and delivery of the project, with a strong emphasis on project management and team coordination.

We are looking for someone with an established and well received track record of curating, leading and managing a team and delivering exhibitions. You will have a love of working with artists, impressive communication and organizational skills along with the commitment and drive to deliver outstanding projects.
