Under the general direction of the Director of Curatorial Affairs, the Curator of American and European Art is a thought leader in the Curatorial Department. This position conceptualizes and oversees a broad range of high-quality exhibitions and curatorial programs inspired by HoMA’s permanent collection and focused on American and European Art circa 1800 to 1950. The Curator conceives and realizes innovative interpretations of art objects, integrating work from other cultural areas when appropriate, to appeal to new and diverse audiences.
The Curator of American and European Artworks in a collaborative team environment with other curators and colleagues across the museum. They assist the Director of Curatorial Affairs and the Advancement department in securing grants and fundraising sources for exhibitions, acquisitions, conservation projects, and other curatorial initiatives as well as recommending accession and deaccession candidates to the Collections Committee. The Curator builds and maintains relationships across the museum and community with donors, artists, members, new audiences, and art professionals. They periodically supervise the work of support staff and interns to ensure the highest professional standards.
The Curator works in consultation with the Learning and Engagement team to gain constructive feedback and diverse perspectives from Hawai‘i’s various cultural communities to increase the relevancy of special exhibitions, permeant collection installations, and programs. The Curator also keeps abreast of the current art market and museum-field trends, widens HoMA’s artist and museum-field networks locally and internationally, and helps ensure efficiency and creative collaboration within the department.
