The Opportunity

Are you a highly-motivated professional with strong knowledge of, and passion for Contemporary Art?  Do you have an aptitude for project organization and an eye for detail?  Visual + Digital Arts at The Banff Centre is looking for a Curatorial Assistant to meet the diverse needs of the Walter Phillips Gallery (WPG) programs, the Banff International Curatorial Institute, and related projects. The successful candidate will also assist in the development and implementation of outreach initiatives and public education to business, creative communities, and the general public.

Responsibilities will include:

  • Maintaining schedules for WPG and related events, while also providing organizational and administrative support to the Curator, artists, and guest curators
  • Coordinating the production of schedule catalogues, exhibition guides, and other exhibition related material including: research, image research and copyright agreements.
  • Staffing opening receptions and special events for the WPG and, in collaborating with other gallery staff, ensuring the smooth running of those events
  • Consulting with the Curator to implement all aspects of registration, insurance, customs, conservation, maintenance, packing, shipping, storage, inspection, condition reporting, and acquisition of art and collections
  • Providing support in grant preparation, final reporting, and other fundraising efforts
  • Monitoring budgets related to WPG programming and providing regular updates as to the status of those budgets to the Visual + Digital Arts Operations Manager , and Curator
  • Maintaining a personal profile as a working professional in the gallery field, and keeping abreast of developments in the curatorial and visual arts fields

The Ideal Candidate

  • Has completed a university degree in art history, curatorial studies, fine arts, media arts, and/or museum studies, with a specialization in contemporary art
  • Brings three to five years’ experience in a museum or organization setting
  • Exhibits excellent planning and organizational skills, as well as strong  communication skills
  • The ability to work on, and prioritize, multiple projects through to a high standard of completion
  • Will demonstrate exquisite attention to detail and function while working under pressure
  • Possess diplomacy with a wide variety of people including Banff Centre staff and the general public

Special Requirements

  • Candidates offered a position with the Centre, in this capacity, will be required to obtain a criminal record check verifying a clear record before a final job offer can be made
  • Due to the deadlines in the job, this position will require working irregular hours and weekends.
  • Candidates are required to meet regular publishing and delivery deadlines.

Employment Terms & Benefits

  • In accordance with CUPE 4318, this is a unionized, permanent, salaried support staff position, subject to a 6-month probationary period.
  • This position pays $3246.75/month increasing to $3609.13/month after probation, working 37.5 hours/week.
