DEFAULT 15: INVESTIGATION ON THE EXTREME LAND

workshop and residency, 13th -19th July 2015

DEFAULT 15 is an international artistic project hosted in the heel of Italy’s Apulia region (Gagliano del Capo, LE), in the centre of the Mediterranean. Currently in its third edition, this year we present a new topic and format. DEFAULT 15 will provide a context to discuss, imagine and put forward sustainable ideas and artistic production related to the “extreme land” as part of an investigative process launched by Ramdom in 2014 in the frame of GAP project.

THE PROJECT

Ramdom association is calling for artists and researchers to take part in a 7-day group investigation aimed at ideas related to extreme lands and remote areas. The project will focus on the life, culture and social relations of extreme lands where geographic dislocation also functions as a socio-anthropological characteristic of the people who live there. The notion of “extreme” as a point of departure confronts challenges to survival as addressed by many scholars and artists particularly relating to climate and environmental conditions. Situated at the tip of southeast Italy on the Mediterranean, Gagliano del Capo poses as an ideal geographic location to explore diverse interpretations on human and natural landscapes in the context of “extreme”.

DEFAULT 15 will offer the opportunity for selected artists and researchers to be a part of and contribute to an investigation of the extreme land.
During working days participants will develop their research approach in intensive workshops and seminar sessions, they will expand their network and exchange know-how with the support of the guest artist.
Ramdom will work with each artist for the potential development and realization of further proposals and projects.
Particular attention will be given to artists who intend to locate the discourse on the extreme land within a broader context across disciplines and practices.
Works will be in English.

Guest Artist will be the film-maker and visual artist Carlos Casas (www.carloscasas.net).

WHO CAN APPLY
This is an international call open to any artist and researcher from all around the world.
Any creative, artist and researcher aged at least 21 may apply. Application of mid-career artists, researchers, collective and organization are encouraged.

Accommodation and partial board will be provided.
Ramdom will provide at least 2 grants of 700-1000€ each, tax excluded.

Participants are free and highly encouraged to apply for other funds or grants in order to cover their travel expenses.

Active and collaborative participation to the programme is mandatory.
Participants are expected to stay in Gagliano del Capo (LE) for the whole duration of the project (workshop and residency, 6th -12th July 2015).

Candidates can submit their applications from 6th April 2015 to 10th May 2015.

The selected participants will be contacted via e-mail by the end of May 2015 to confirm their participation and sign the Participation Agreement.

How to apply:
Applicants are invited to send an email to default(at)ramdom.net with the Subject:
“Application_Default15_yourname&lastname” and the following attachments:

1. Application form completed with the required information (Annex A) (in.doc or pdf format);
2. An Artist Statement detailing how your practice relates to the extreme land theme and your particular focus of interest, preferably detailing a previously realized project OR a project proposal OR a paper on a theoretical subject related to the thematic framework. (in.doc or pdf format, max 700 words);
3. Copy of your Identity card or Passport (please make sure the expiration date is visible);
4. Curriculum Vitae (biography) with personal data of the artist, their educational background and their former artistic experiences (no more than 2 x A4) ) (in.doc or pdf format);
5. Portfolio with images of recent works or links to the useful documentation (video, audio, sketches, etc.) – max. 5 images or 1MB/ Video link via Vimeo/YouTube or website link.
6. Signed Release Note (Annex B);

PLEASE NOTE that all the documents have to be submitted in English. Other languages will not be admitted to the selection.

Selection and promotion:
The winning applications will be determined by the Selection Committee based on the evaluation of: general presentation, creative vision, coherence between previous works and the topics of Default15, critical perspective, sustainability of new potential work.
