Escalator retreat at Wysing Arts Centre.

Wysing Arts Centre invites applications for the artistic retreat Space of Attention. Open to any visual artist, art-writer or curator living and working in England.
In the twelfth Escalator retreat at Wysing Arts Centre, Space of Attention, we invite artists, art-writers and curators to explore alternative educational models and strategies. During an intensive four days, each participant will lead one workshop for the group and participate in others. Each day, invited speakers will help contextualise the workshop environment adding historical context and their own contributions. Crits and practical talks will ask participants to reflect on their practice, consider new or alternative ways of producing, share ideas and to approach their work from other and alternative perspectives. The final day will conclude with a public outcome from the retreat group.
Space of Attention is suited to artists, art-writers and curators interested in multidisciplinary exercises, both led and self-initiated, and will include contributions from experts from diverse fields. The retreat has been formed as a progression from the previous retreat And if it Was it Can’t Be Is which was developed in collaboration with artist Mark Titchner. Participants from the previous retreat contributing to Space of Attention include Annabelle Craven-Jones, Mat Do, Clare Gasson, Claire Hope, Glen Jamieson, Kit Poulson, Kari Rittenbach, Florian Roithmayr and Alan Stanners.
The retreat Space of Attention is open to any visual artist, art-writer or curator living and working in England. 10 participants will be invited to attend the retreat following a selection process (details below). Five places are reserved for those from the South East and East of England regions. There is no charge for participating in the retreat.
DATES
The retreat will take place from 15 – 18 October 2012 and will include a public outcome on 18 October 2012.

HOW TO APPLY
There is no form to fill in to apply for the retreat. Instead we ask you to answer the following questions and provide us with the information listed below. We accept hard copy or emailed applications. We prefer emailed applications as a single PDF file (For this we recommend PDF Forge http://www.pdfforge.org/) and will only accept applications below 3mb in size. Please call Wysing’s reception to confirm receipt or your application.
1. How is this retreat relevant to your practice at this time? (max 200 words)
2. What do you think you can bring to the retreat and what would you want to get out of it? (max 200 words)
3. Please provide a proposal for a 45 minute workshop. (max 400 words)

A maximum of six pieces of documentation of your work. This may be six images or other forms of material that best represents your practice.
WORKSHOP INFORMATION
Each participant’s workshop slot will be 45 minutes long. They can take the form of a participatory exercise, talk, reading group, performance, screening, making session, walk, combination of the above or whatever form feels appropriate. Wysing can provide up to £50 for any necessary materials, please state what these would be.

SELECTION PROCEDURE
Following submission, retreat participants will be selected by Wysing’s Curatorial Team. Selection will be based on proposals received following the Call for Participation and will be based on the information provided as described in How to Apply.
ACCOMODATION
Wysing can provide free accommodation in our farmhouse. All rooms are for multiple use and we are not able to offer individual rooms. Facilities include shared bathrooms, living room and kitchen.
BURSARIES
A small number of bursaries are available to any applicant in need of financial support to attend the retreats. Those wishing to apply for a bursary are invited to write no more than 250 words on how much financial support they would need to enable them to attend the retreat and what the money would be used for.
POST RETREAT FUNDING
All artists attending the retreat will be invited to propose ideas to develop their findings from it further, either jointly or individually. A limited number of proposals (dependant on numbers submitted and amounts) from each retreat will then be selected and supported to submit applications to Grants for the Arts to realise their ideas.
