The National Portrait Gallery houses a unique collection of portraits of the men and women who have helped shape British history and culture. Now numbering over 11,000 portraits the primary collection embraces every medium – oil paintings, drawings, miniatures, photographs, mixed/new media and sculpture. Besides this the Gallery has a photographs collection of 250,000 images and a reference collection of 80,000 prints, caricatures etc. The Gallery has an increasingly high public profile and now attracts 2 million visitors to its galleries and regional partnerships.
The Exhibitions Department plans and manages the Gallery’s programme of temporary exhibitions, including any tours. The team work with every department across the Gallery as well as colleagues nationally and globally. There are six exhibitions each year, and the Gallery programmes up to four to five years in advance. The Exhibitions Officer will provide full administrative and practical support to the Exhibitions Managers and the Head of Exhibitions in the realisation of the loan, touring and competitions exhibitions programme.
The successful candidate will have a degree or equivalent in art history, history or a similar subject, along with demonstrable experience of working in an Exhibitions Team within a Museum or Gallery. They will have proven understanding of exhibition and industry procedures and best practice, along with excellent computer skills, meticulous attention to detail and awareness of issues surrounding the handling of objects and works of art.
