The Design Museum’s temporary exhibitions programme will be the central focus of its activities at its new home in Kensington which it plans to open to the public at the end of 2016. An influential and engaging programme of paid-for temporary exhibitions, alongside its free permanent display, will need to attract in excess of 600,000 visitors to the museum every year.
Exhibitions include monographs and thematic exhibitions on every aspect of contemporary design and architecture. The Head of Exhibitions is responsible for delivering the exhibitions programme in conjunction with the Chief Curator who provides leadership on creative content, championing accessible and audience-led interpretive approaches.
The Head of Exhibitions will also play a key role in delivering a successful transition from the Design Museum at Shad Thames to its new home. This will include planning and delivering the opening exhibition programme, including the permanent collection display, two temporary exhibitions and public displays.
The Head of Exhibitions is responsible for the development of key partnerships for exhibitions, working closely with colleagues at the Design Museum. S/he will champion the Design Museum exhibitions nationally and internationally.
The Head of Exhibitions line manages the touring and project management teams.
The person
You will have extensive experience of managing all aspects of temporary exhibitions and possess excellent project management skills with evidence of the ability to plan work to meet agreed standards, deadlines and budgets.
The ideal candidate will posses a sound knowledge of interpretation methodologies and audience needs in the context of museum exhibitions.
You will have a degree in design history, art history or equivalent and an interest in and commitment to the work of the Design Museum.
