International Residency Program
Studija Space is looking for creative minds – artists, curators, writers, designers, photographers, and others to envision their projects at the newly established art space in Kuldīga, Latvia. The organisation is seeking thinkers from various creative fields who would like to spend at least two weeks (up to two months) in Kuldīga city, developing their creative projects. Priority will be given to authors who deal with themes such as ecology, nature, changing landscapes, pollution, and the fragility of the environment and human relationships. Studija Space also encourages projects that involve community engagement and relate to the local context of Kuldīga.
Kuldīga is a small town located in Courland, the western part of Latvia. Known for its UNESCO status as an exceptionally well-preserved example of a traditional urban settlement, it attracts visitors from around the world as well as local creatives seeking a tranquil and peaceful environment. Studija is located in the Kaļķu Street quarter, a lively creative hub with many small, locally run enterprises. Just a few meters from Studija Space is the river Venta, a defining element of the town’s structure that contributes to its scenic character. The Courland region is known for its strong craft traditions and oral history, such as the well-preserved bourdon singing in Alsunga, a 25-minute drive from Kuldīga.
Available residency time slots are September 2 – 20, October and December, 2024, as well as January and April, 2025.
Provided are:
- Around 80 square meters of studio space with basic equipment and amenities.
- Curatorial assistance in developing your artistic and/or research project, including networking opportunities not only in the Courland region but also in Latvia and more broadly – in the Baltics.
- Basic technical assistance.
- A welcoming and tranquil environment.
- The possibility to present your work publicly, involving the local community and art scenes in Latvia.
Residents are responsible for lodging, accommodation, and living expenses. The organisation will provide support in applying for funding.
