Achieving success as an emerging curator, artist or art professional is not solely dependent on talent or vision. Instead, it requires essential skills to effectively navigate the art world—a distinct social field with its own dynamics and protocols. This 2-day intensive workshop is designed for aspiring curators and artists who want to gain a thorough understanding of the workings of the art system and get equipped with a strong foundation to launch a career in contemporary art.

During the first session, we will explore the diverse roles and responsibilities of artists and curators, while gaining an understanding of the different phases of an art career. You will also learn effective networking strategies needed to develop valuable relationships within the art world, and gain insights into how galleries, museums, art fairs, and auction houses function.

The second session will provide an understanding of the often unspoken values and professional codes that govern the art world and outline how to adhere to them to build a successful career. We will also explore avenues for supporting yourself financially, including how to apply for grants and scholarships. Finally, we will develop a clear understanding of the art market and learn how to promote your work effectively, gaining insight into the importance of developing a personal brand and a unique artistic voice.

Keeping in mind that the art world varies across context, we will examine case studies of established artists and curators to gain context-specific insights into the unique strategies and techniques that these individuals used to succeed in their art careers. The workshop format will also encourage participants to share their personal experiences and learn from each other.

By the end of this course, you will have a thorough understanding of how to effectively promote yourself, secure funding and build a mutually-supportive network. Through these essential skills, you will be well-equipped to navigate the competitive art world and forge a successful professional path, establishing your career with confidence and proficiency.
