Curatorial Resident (2014)
MINI/Goethe-Institut Curatorial Residencies Ludlow 38, the contemporary art space of the Goethe-Institut New York generously supported by MINI, is presently seeking a Curatorial Resident(2014).
Located on Manhattan’s Lower East Side, Ludlow 38 has provided for curatorial experimentation in the tradition of the German Kunstverein since 2008. Its mission is to introduce new international perspectives to a vibrant downtown art scene and to foster dialogue within the greater aesthetic and political context of New York and the United States.
Ludlow 38 is shaped by the distinctive points of view and vigor of its annually rotating curators. The successful candidate will be given the opportunity to apply his or her vision to the space while gaining experience in managing a small gallery with an international profile. Under the supervision of the Goethe-Institut New York, he or she is expected to program the space with a variety of critical and engaging formats over the course of the year, including organization, installation, and external communication for a total of six exhibitions and related events.
Applicants should have a minimum of five years of curatorial experience in Germany and a clear vision of their own practice as curators. Fluency in German and English is expected. Knowledge of the history of exhibition making and a keen awareness of the social and political context in which curatorial work is presented are crucial, as is a critical understanding of contemporary art. Applicants should be able to demonstrate a significant link between their own trajectory and the cultural discourse of the last decades in Germany. The successful candidate is furthermore expected to possess a methodology and curatorial approach that will enable him or her to establish a dialogue between Ludlow 38 and other initiatives at a local and international level.
In addition to a one-page CV and a cover letter, applicants should provide two 500 word outlines of exhibition and/or project ideas that explore the potential of exhibition making at Ludlow 38 and which they would like to see implemented during a one-year residency at the space. All materials must be submitted electronically and in English. Applications will be judged on the basis of previous experience, submitted project proposals, as well as the capacity to work with a limited budget and make a focused impact on the competitive and rapidly changing New York art scene.
The position includes a stipend to cover living expenses and health insurance as well as a small remuneration for services provided at the gallery (4200 USD total per month). The Goethe-Institut New York will support the successful candidate’s application for a J1 exchange visa for the United States.
The final selection of the Curatorial Resident (2014) will be made by an international jury of three high profile curators.
