Nick Waterlow OAM Curatorial Fellowship
Deadline: December 7, 2012
The Biennale of Sydney is a non-profit arts organisation that presents an international festival of contemporary art (and Australia’s largest contemporary art exhibition) every two years in Sydney’s major art museums and galleries, and locations throughout the city.
The Biennale of Sydney is one of the longest running international biennales and Australia’s leading contemporary visual arts event. Since its inception in 1973, the Biennale of Sydney has successfully delivered 18 major exhibitions, and provided an international platform for innovative and challenging contemporary art, showcasing the work of 1593 artists from over 100 countries.
The Nick Waterlow OAM Curatorial Fellowship was established by the Visual Arts Board of the Australia Council for the Arts in partnership with the Biennale of Sydney to celebrate the memory of Nick Waterlow OAM (1941–2009) and the extraordinary contribution he made to Australian and international contemporary visual arts.
Nick Waterlow was the Biennale’s most prolific artistic director. He curated the 1979, 1986 and 1988 exhibitions, and was Chair of the International Selection Committee in 2000. For 11 years (1994–2005), Nick Waterlow also served on the Board of the Biennale of Sydney. From 1980–83, Nick Waterlow was also the Director of the Visual Arts Board of the Australia Council.
The Fellowship is an opportunity to be awarded to an Australian emerging curator who will be mentored by Juliana Engberg, Artistic Director of the 19 th Biennale of Sydney (2014).
The Nick Waterlow OAM Curatorial Fellow is responsible for facilitating and coordinating the Artistic Director’s research, which includes research and writing content for the catalogue and guidebook, as well as working as part of the exhibition team on the planning, administration, development and delivery of the exhibition.
The position offers an emerging curator the rare opportunity to be part of a small, highly motivated team while performing curatorial tasks, working alongside other departments and communicating with artists, collectors and arts professionals. The Fellow will assist in the coordination of exhibition programming and contemporary artists’ projects.
The position works closely with the Artistic Director, Head of Exhibition, Deputy Head of Exhibition, Curatorial and Research Coordinator, NSW APDP Aboriginal Emerging Curator, Exhibition and Venue Manager, Exhibition and Venue Coordinator, Registrar and the team at the Biennale of Sydney. The Nick Waterlow OAM Curatorial Fellow reports directly to the Head of Exhibition.
A representative of the Visual Arts Board of the Australia Council will be present at the interviews and prior to the official appointment, the preferred candidate will be approved by members of the Visual Arts Board.
This is a two-year, full-time Fellowship related to the 2014 event for the period from 28 January 2013 to 31 December 2014. The remuneration is $54,625 per annum (including 9.25% employer’s superannuation contribution and pro rata for the first year).
