OSLO10 is looking for a curatorial team

Deadline: November 30, 2012

OSLO10, the independent exhibition space for contemporary art in Basel, is looking for a curatorial team for the period from April 1st, 2013, to March 30th, 2015.

Next to the future Academy of Art and Design (University of Applied Sciences Northwestern Switzerland, 2013) on the Dreispitz area in Basel, Switzerland, a cluster of visual arts is emerging. Since 2011 several pioneering institutions and initiatives have moved to this area, including the House for Electronic Arts (formerly known as plug.in and  Shift Festival), several galleries, Radio X and studios for regional professional visual artists.

Here the space for experimental and contemporary art OSLO10 has opened in April 2011. After an international call for proposals, a team of curators (Christiane Rekade and Simone Neuenschwander) was granted the mandate to develop a two-year programme of exhibitions and activities named HOTAVANTGARDEHOTHOT. During its three phases the curators included different methods that dealt with the site and its transformative potential: An early phase of exploration called Pioneers to the Falls featured fleeting events, ephemeral performances, film screenings and temporary installations in the gallery space as well as on the larger site of Dreispitz. The second movement (Wild Signs) consisted of solo- and group shows. The third phase will cultivate and document the fruits of the first programme, transforming the gallery space into an open editorial office (Keep the Ball in the Air and the Game alive, Fall 2012), where a comprehensive publication will be produced, accompanied by presentations, readings and talks.

What is OSLO10?

OSLO10 is a new space for experimental and contemporary art. It is located 10 minutes by public transport from the central train station Basel SBB, in an industrial and warehouse area (Dreispitz) that is currently in a process of transformation into a place for living and working and a cluster of the arts. It is situated in the “Atelier- und Gewerbehaus OSLO” at Oslostrasse 10: a freshly renovated space of 204 square meters offers space for exhibitions, cultural events and office activities. The Christoph Merian Foundation ensures a yearly contribution of 60’000.00 Swiss francs, 40’000.00 of which are designated for exhibitions and projects, and 20’000.00 for wage. The rent of the space is covered by the Christoph Merian Foundation as well. The duration of the mandate is limited to two years (non-renewable).

Curators are given the opportunity to take over the complete management of the space, including the programming, administration and maintenance, in the sense of a carte blanche. During the time of the mandate, the named curators are given free rein to the programming. The curatorial is deliberately not conceived as a full-time job, but allows to combine other part-time jobs with this mandate.

Conditions of participation

Entitled to participate are curatorial teams of the visual arts (fine arts, photography, video, film, performance, design, digital/electronic arts etc.) irrespective of age and nationality. A housing situation in Basel or proximity of at least one member of the curatorial team is desirable.
