The Department of Art + Design is seeking applications for a Part-time Gallery Director for Averill and Bernard Leviton A+D Gallery. This is a part-time, no benefits position. The position does not offer relocation assistance.
Job Summary
Position reports to the Chair of the Art and Design Department, serves as the Chair of the A+D Gallery Advisory Board, and supervises a Gallery Assistant Director, a Gallery Preparator, and student workers.
The Gallery Director is responsible for organizing six professional and two student exhibitions per year in a broad range of media, including fine arts, new media, graphic and industrial design and acts as the liaison between the Gallery, A+D dept, and the College in regards to college-wide planning for events like Manifest and Art Walks.
The Director facilitates the day-to-day operation of the gallery. The position requires interaction with the Security Command when extended hours of operation needed and with Building Services, A+D Department Manager of Technology, and Manager of Facilities to address specific exhibition requirements.
Duties & Responsibilities
* Maintains the exhibition calendar and facilitates long-term exhibition planning in conjunction with the gallery’s mission and as part of the College’s strategic goals. Determines exhibition and event schedule dates 1-2 years in advance.
* Serves as the curators’ liaison for all aspects of exhibition planning and preparation, collaborating with the Gallery Preparator on the creation of contracts and lender loan forms and with Art + Design office staff on artists and curators travel arrangements.
* Collects and presents proposals for review.
* Supervises art installation, handling, and shipping through the supervision of the Gallery Preparator and student workers.
* Manages gallery budget in collaboration with the Art + Design Budget Analyst. Along with the Gallery Assistant Director, conducts grant research, grant writing, and submission in partnership with the Office of Institutional Advancement.
* Attends College Advancement Council meetings with Gallery Assistant Director and submits annual Funders Reports to the Office Institutional Advancement.
* Recruits new non-Columbia members to serve on the Advisory Board annually.
* Oversees the production of all print and educational material – announcement cards, catalogs, window/wall didactics, in collaboration with the Office of Creative Services. Maintains the gallery website.
Job Requirements
Minimum Education & Experience
* Bachelor’s degree required, Master’s degree preferred.
* Minimum of five years gallery management experience, preferably non-profit or academic gallery.
Preferred Qualifications
* Strong organizational and time management skills, attention to detail.
* Ability to communicate effectively with faculty, staff, and students across the College.
* Ability to work both independently and as a team member.
* Familiarity with a wide range of arts media.
* Art handling experience required.
* Ability to work in a managerial role.
* Ability to foster relationships with curators, artists, designers and galleries.
* Familiarity with Mac systems, and knowledge of Microsoft Office suite and Acrobat Pro.
