Seeking Artistic Director – Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam

The new director will demonstrate a clear vision of a new future for the Stedelijk Museum (where the museum will be 5-10 years) also in relation to prominent international museums for modern and contemporary art.

He/she possesses the creativity and insights required to enhance and revitalize the unique identity and role of the Stedelijk. The successful candidate will be responsible for implementing his/her vision to position the Stedelijk Museum as a leading international institution within the current political and economic climate.

The artistic director will develop a sound art-theoretical vision of the collection. He/she will also establish an acquisitions strategy grounded in scholarship as well as make an exhaustive inventory and description of the present collection, identify gaps that need to be filled, and so on.

The artistic director will encourage scholarly research. He/she has a clear vision for transforming the two principle characteristics of the Stedelijk – a classic modern art museum with a world class collection and legendary tradition, and a platform for contemporary art – into a new duality. The artistic director will achieve this in part by the inspiration of artists, and the support of excellent connections in the art market.

He/she will be energized by the challenge to purchase daringly, early and relatively inexpensive artworks in accordance with the acquisition budget.
