Senior Curator of Asian Art
The National Gallery of Australia (NGA) holds the nation’s most broadly representative collection of historical Asian Art, comprising around 5,000 works of art in a range of media from Southeast, South, East and Central Asia. Strengths of the collection include Southeast and South Asian textiles, Hindu, Buddhist and animist sculpture, Central Asian costumes and Japanese art. Recently, the NGA has increased its focus on the display and collection of contemporary art from the region.
The occupant of this position will lead the NGA Asian Art department, and ensure the continuing strategic development and management of the collection. Responsibilities will centre on research, interpretation and promotion of Asian Art through NGA exhibitions, collection displays, publications and web content. The Senior Curator role offers an exciting opportunity to contribute to the NGA’s ongoing commitment to providing Australian audiences with enriching and informative art experiences. The position works in close collaboration with curatorial and provenance research colleagues and reports to the Head of International Art.
