The Winnipeg Art Gallery seeks a highly motivated and experienced individual to assume the role of Curator of Contemporary Art. The WAG is committed to expanding its collection and programs in contemporary art from 1970 to the present, making this position an extraordinary opportunity for the right candidate. As Canada’s oldest civic art gallery with a collection of over 26,000 objects spanning several centuries, cultures, and media, including the world’s preeminent collection of contemporary Inuit art, the WAG is celebrating its 100th anniversary in 2012-13.

The successful candidate will be fully integrated into the Curatorial department with a complete range of curatorial activities, including developing the collection through gift and purchase, collections research and publications, gallery interpretation and exhibition development, and working closely with the Education and Studio teams. Reporting to the Chief Curator, s/he will be a pragmatic organizer and team worker with a proven intellectual track record, excellent knowledge of contemporary art, particularly Canadian. His/her interests should be broad but established in a vision of contemporary art as practice in active dialogue with the contemporary world and its concerns.

A post-graduate degree (M.A. or Ph.D.) in Art History is required, with a minimum of five years of museum or gallery experience. Candidates will be judged on their institutional record, scholarly profile, and interpersonal, supervisory and communication skills. Ability to work as part of a team is essential. The candidate must be able to demonstrate a clear vision of his/her own curatorial practice. Proven experience in the organization of contemporary art projects, exhibitions, and interpretive programs, and knowledge of the international contexts for contemporary art is expected. Proven fundraising and budget management experience is also required, along with the ability to develop effective partnerships. He/she must be computer literate and able to work flexible hours as needed to oversee projects and programs, and participate in other Gallery activities.

Compensation commensurate with experience. The WAG offers competitive compensation and comprehensive benefits packages, including employer paid life, health, dental, and vision care coverage premiums, and summer long weekends, with Mondays off in June, July and August through a planned compressed work week.
