Work with MoMA curators and educators and gain experience in the museum field

Full-time, 12-month internships with stipends are offered for recent college graduates interested in pursuing a museum career. The focused departmental training is integrated with the fall, spring, and summer lecture series and complemented with financial provisions for the interns to create a research trip related to their field of interest. Twelve-month internships provide training in specific museum fields through close work with a professional staff member, familiarity with modern and contemporary art through seminars and discussions, and an educational program that exposes interns to the workings of the Museum as a whole, while considering the role of museums in the broader cultural context.

Below are the descriptions and requirements for the 12–month internship positions for 2017–18. All internships begin on September 11, 2017, and conclude on September 7, 2018.

 

Research and Development Internship

September 11, 2017–September 7, 2018

Description: The intern will assist the director of Research and Development, Paola Antonelli, in all areas. He/she will perform administrative and research tasks in the context of R&D functions: coordinates interaction with other Museum departments and committees; researches topics, companies, individuals, and technologies of immediate and long-term relevance to R&D and to the Museum; keeps track of pertinent topics in publications, blogs, and social networks; prepares mailings and briefings for selected MoMA staff; and maintains a site for the R&D department. The intern will coordinate a group of R&D advisors and organize meetings of various scale and kind, from one-on-one interviews to private salons and public symposia. He/she will act as a liaison with other areas of the Museum, such as curatorial departments, Digital Media and IT, Marketing and Communications, Development, Membership, Retail, and the offices of the COO, the senior deputy director for curatorial affairs, and the CFO.

Requirements: Academic background in communication, journalism, design criticism, or a similarly composed curriculum that combines innovation, communication, and design. Knowledgeable and self-assured in using contemporary media. Technologically up to date and conversant with design, especially interfaces and interaction. Excellent writing, communication, research, and organizational skills. Highly motivated with attention to detail. Computer and mobile skills (Google Docs, Word, PowerPoint, Excel, Keynote, Twitter, basic Photoshop, and InDesign). Enthusiasm for working with a team and ability to manage multiple projects. Two years of experience in coordinating projects such as conferences or symposia preferred.

Community and Access Programs Internship
Department of Education

September 11, 2017–September 7, 2018

Description: The intern will organize and coordinate various Access Programs, including those for individuals who are blind, partially sighted, deaf, hard of hearing, or have developmental disabilities or Alzheimer’s disease. The intern will coordinate volunteers, sign-language interpreters, captioners, and educators, and will help to administer programs across the department. This intern will also be responsible for office tasks such as managing art supply inventory and orders, documenting programs and partnerships, taking reservations for programs, transcribing materials for exhibitions and videos, and submitting materials to MoMA’s electronic archive. Finally, the intern will have the opportunity to participate in educator training and teach in the galleries.

Requirements: The ideal candidate must have an interest in accessible art museum programming, a taste for interacting with the public, and experience working with people with disabilities or community groups. The candidate should have the ability to multitask, be extremely organized, and be able to successfully execute both administrative and program-oriented projects. Fluency in a foreign language, including American Sign Language, is preferable.

Department of Architecture and Design Internship

September 11, 2017–September 7, 2018

Description: The intern will assist with tasks related to two MoMA exhibitions and publications: Items: Is Fashion Modern?, opening September 2017, and The Architecture of Socialist Yugoslavia, 1945–1991 (working title), opening in June 2018. Responsibilities specific to the Items exhibition include assisting with planning and logistics for the exhibition opening reception, helping coordinate with external and internal parties for exhibition-related public programming, and assisting curatorial staff with the management of a high volume of exhibition-related tasks and inquiries once the exhibition is on view. The exhibition’s primary focus will be fashion design. Films, photographs, drawings, prints, and works in other mediums will also be included. The exhibition will include a number of loaned works. Responsibilities specific to the Architecture of Socialist Yugoslavia, 1945–1991 exhibition include assisting with researching and clearing image rights for exhibition, catalogue, and digital use; handling written correspondence and project inquiries with internal and external parties; assisting with loan documentation; assisting with the organization, documentation, and cataloging of works for inclusion in the exhibition; helping to collate and route object labels and explanatory texts through internal approvals; and assisting curatorial staff with the management of a high volume of exhibition-related tasks and inquiries once the exhibition is on view. The exhibition’s primary focus will be architecture from socialist Yugoslavia. Models, films, photographs, drawings, prints, and works in other mediums will also be included. The exhibition will include a number of loaned works. Reports to the Philip Johnson Chief Curator of Architecture and Design.

Requirements: The ideal candidate will have experience working in curatorial and research settings, will have a background in architecture and/or design, and will possess excellent writing skills. The intern will have completed scholarly research for academic and/or museum projects, and have a working knowledge of best practices in curatorial procedures (creating and refining a checklist, generating object labels and wall texts, etc.). The candidate should have exceptional organizational and communication skills; demonstrated ability to work on multiple tasks simultaneously and meet tight deadlines; and the ability to take initiative. Bachelor’s degree in architecture, art history, and/or design, and graduate coursework required.

The Modern Women’s Fund Internship
Department of Drawings and Prints

September 11, 2017–September 7, 2018

Description: The intern will work in the Department of Drawings and Prints, conducting research on a major acquisition of avant-garde works, with a focus on women artists. In a broader capacity, the intern will conduct research relating to acquisitions of work by women artists as part of a larger departmental initiative to increase the number of women artists in the collection. The intern will participate in the logistics, research, planning, and organization of a host of activities that are generated as part of MoMA’s Modern Women’s Fund initiative, along with various research assignments, under the guidance of the curatorial and administrative staff.

Requirements: The ideal candidate has an art history background (MA candidates preferred) with a focus on the art and avant-garde movements of the early 20th century. A reading knowledge of Russian and/or German is preferred. The candidate must possess very strong research skills and the ability to multitask and prioritize. Previous experience working in a museum or gallery setting preferred.

Department of Film Internship

September 11, 2017–September 7, 2018

Description: The intern participates in the entire spectrum of curatorial activities in which the Department of Film engages, from exhibition planning to visiting the Celeste Bartos Film Preservation Center. The intern will focus on research, planning, and execution of MoMA’s annual Doc Fortnight Film festival, working with the organizing curator on all administrative aspects of the project.In addition, the intern assists various curatorial and administrative staff in all aspects of Film operations. This internship is supported by MoMA’s Friends of Education, a Museum affiliate group dedicated to supporting African American and African diaspora artists and audience development at the Museum.

Requirements: The ideal candidate will have a liberal arts academic background and a general knowledge of film and film culture, with an interest in documentary film strongly preferred. Strong writing skills and Spanish-language fluency are highly desired.

Department of Media and Performance Art Internship

September 11, 2017–September 7, 2018

Description: The intern will primarily work with the department’s associate curators and curatorial assistant on the upcoming exhibition The Work Is Never Done: Placing Judson Dance Theater opening in fall, 2018. The intern’s tasks will primarily focus on the exhibition catalogue, including bibliographic research, image sourcing and permission requests, and editing and design assistance. Additional duties will include support with exhibition planning, liaising with the artists’ studios, event support, working fluidly across the Museum’s departments, and other tasks as assigned.

Requirements: The ideal candidate has an art history and/or media and performance art background (MA candidates preferred), strong research skills, reading knowledge of one foreign language, the ability to multitask and prioritize, and the ability to communicate effectively especially under pressure. Previous experience working with artists in a museum setting, or specifically with media and performance art, preferred.

Office of the Director Internship

September 11, 2017–September 7, 2018

Description: The intern performs general administrative duties, which include routing phone and email traffic. Supports the director, chief of staff, and assistant to the director. Answers phone calls, drafts correspondence, maintains file system, and opens and sorts all mail. Responds to general inquiries on behalf of the department, ensuring communication is accurate, timely, and consistent with other Museum initiatives. Maintains general organization of office in accordance with records management policies. Serves as a first point to contact and liaison for all Director’s Office contacts, including MoMA and MoMA PS1 trustees, staff, artists, scholars, dealers, and art world professionals.

Requirements: Organized, articulate, and professional. Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint) and other standard office procedures and equipment. Excellent written and verbal communication skills. Ability to work efficiently in a fast-paced environment. Must be extremely detail oriented, work well under pressure, and have the ability to multitask. Ability to maintain composure in a sometimes stressful environment is a must. High level of diplomacy, judgment, and accountability.

Digital Media Internship

Description: This is an entry-level position that offers wide exposure and deep insight into the inner workings of an agile digital team at a major cultural organization. Collaborates with developers, editors, producers, designers, and outside vendors, and works cross-departmentally with stakeholders across the Museum to ensure content and feature requests are carried out successfully. Assists in the prioritization and scheduling of tasks and small projects. Responsible for daily updates to the website, including creative copywriting, data entry, and copy editing. Gathers and organizes images and media files, checks rights and credits, and preps images as final assets for Web production. Tracks Web metrics and responds to user feedback. Conducts testing and quality assurance, including in-gallery user testing. Contributes to idea generation, design workshops, and product evaluations.

Requirements: The Digital Media team welcomes candidates with diverse backgrounds and perspectives. The ideal candidate is a skilled writer, with an enthusiasm for art, who avidly follows new technologies and digital culture. Has a bachelor’s degree in a related field, or equivalent experience. Proactive and creative problem-solver who works well under pressure in a fast-paced environment with tight deadlines and shifting priorities. Comfortable working collaboratively as well as on their own—a self-starter. Strong writing and editing skills, with excellent attention to detail and the ability to manage multiple tasks simultaneously. Good knowledge of HTML, CSS, and Adobe Photoshop preferred. Department of Photography Internship

Description: Under the guidance of the curatorial and administrative staff, the intern will primarily work on two projects: the 2018 edition of the New Photography contemporary exhibition series, and the installation of MoMA’s collection for the 2019 reopening. Responsibilities specific to the exhibitions include assisting with researching and clearing image rights for exhibition, catalogue, and digital use; helping coordinate with external and internal parties for exhibition-related public programming; assisting with logistics for the exhibition opening reception; and assisting curatorial staff with the management of a high volume of exhibition-related tasks and inquiries.

Requirements: The ideal candidate should have an art history and/or photography history background, very strong research skills, and a working knowledge of best practices in curatorial procedures (creating and refining a checklist, generating object labels and wall texts, etc.). Public Programs Internship

Description: The intern will provide support to the Adult and Academic Programs area of the Department of Education. Tasks include coordinating monthly gallery programs, maintaining daily correspondence, assisting in research and set-up for evening programs, and liaising with program participants, MoMA staff, volunteers, and Audio Visual staff. The intern will learn all of the details involved in making a program run successfully, including marketing and ticketing. The intern will also have the opportunity to put together his or her own program, from conception to realization.

Requirements: The ideal candidate has the ability to multitask, is extremely organized, and is able to successfully execute both administrative and research-oriented projects. Works collaboratively and helps to create new ways for audiences to engage with modern and contemporary art. The position requires a candidate who enjoys interacting with the public and with a range of staff and program participants. Must handle last-minute, logistical, or personnel challenges with ease. Must be available to work at public programs in the evenings.
