The Marcia Brady Tucker Curatorial Fellowship in Photography is a full-time, two-year fellowship intended for an emerging scholar in the History of Photography considering a curatorial career. Reporting to the Richard Benson Associate Curator of Photography and Digital Media and working closely with colleagues across and beyond Yale University, the Fellow will be fully integrated into the Department of Photography and will gain broad, hands-on experience with photographic collections in an academic museum with a focus on object-based teaching. The Fellow will participate fully in the department’s activities, and will be exposed to the exhibitions planning and the development of related publications and programs while working with the collection curator to conduct essential research. Emerging scholars with an advanced degree in art history, museum studies, or a related academic field, as well as a strong interest in the history of photography and teaching with collections are particularly encouraged to apply.
The Fellow provides organizational, teaching, and project support related to the Gallery’s photography collection; responds to queries about the collection; and interacts with scholars, students, and the public on matters concerning the collection. Responsibilities include coordinating faculty requests for teaching with photographs, managing and overseeing class visits utilizing photographs from the collection in a busy study room; and serving as the primary liaison between the Photography department and faculty teaching from the collection, all while ensuring the special care, security, and proper user handling of the collection. The Fellow is also responsible for processing new acquisitions using The Museum System (TMS) and preparing the published list of departmental acquisitions in the annual Bulletin, along with additional duties as assigned by supervisor.
A master’s degree in Art History or related field; a demonstrated interest in the history and materiality of photography and a commitment to object-based teaching; the ability to handle original works of art with care and to safely lift boxes up to 35 lbs. several times throughout the day, are required. Successful candidates will excellent communication, interpersonal, research, and writing skills; demonstrated ability to communicate with museum staff and the public in a knowledgeable and professional manner; and demonstrated ability to take initiative and anticipate actions needed.
