
Assistant / Associate Curator

- Assist full and senior curators with research for and the development and coordination of major Tower or Rotunda-scale exhibitions. This includes all aspects of exhibitions development including:
- administration of loan requests and negotiations;
- liaising with exhibitions management, technical and installation teams to support implementation
- liaising with project management and exhibition management teams in budget preparation and management for exhibitions and exhibition-related projects
- Coordinating (and possibly writing for) accompanying publications
- Conduct scholarly research on collection artists and artworks as needed for exhibitions, acquisitions and publications.
- Independently organize smaller modern or contemporary exhibitions for the Tower galleries and for the Guggenheim Museum Bilbao and possibly other venues (for touring collection exhibitions)
- Serve on one or more of the museum’s acquisition committees, which entails selecting and presenting art works for purchase as well as collaborating with advancement staff to program committee activities (studio visits, travel, etc.)
- Participate in one or more of the curatorial think tank groups (Contemporary, Modern, or Frameworks) for program ideation, collection strategy, etc.
- Work closely with the advancement team for donor cultivation
- Engage strategically with the museum’s social media and marketing teams to promote curatorial content
- Work closely with the public programming team to conceptualize and execute dynamic discursive programming
Qualifications and Requirements:
- M.A. in Art History or the equivalent (defined as at least 3 years prior museum work experience). Ph.D or advanced graduate studies in African-American studies and critical theory is preferred. Majors in other relevant disciplines will also be considered on a case-by-case basis.
- Background in modern and contemporary art with demonstrated interest in African-American studies.
- Previous experience of working in a museum curatorial department.
- Interest and ability in curatorial research.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills.
- Professional demeanor and diplomatic approach.
- Ability to successfully interact with a wide variety of internal and external individuals, including artists, galleries, donors, and colleagues in the museum field.
- Ability to successfully interact and collaborate with other museum departments including Exhibition Management, Editorial, Education, Advancement, Finance, Marketing, Security, etc.
- Proficiency in a language other than English desired but not required.
- Knowledge of TMS and MS Office software.
