Exhibition Manager, Art & Design Specialist

Working closely with the Director of Operations and the Senior Exhibition Manager, the Exhibition Manager, Art and Design Specialist serves as one of three full-time staff Exhibition Managers for Exhibitions and Exhibition Studies, and works closely with all departments to facilitate all events and exhibition activity, with a special focus art preparations and gallery logistics.

As the lead preparator for “traditional” art media such as painting, photography, sculpture, and works on paper, and working closely with the Exhibitions Coordinator, this manager:

  • Executes and directs procedures including matting, framing, glazing, stretching, hinging, mounting, storage, packing, handling, and installation.
  • Designs, fabricates, installs, maintains and oversees hanging/mounting hardware for artworks.
  • Demonstrates and shares art-handling/preparations knowledge and techniques to student exhibitors and student staff.
  • Designs and maintains infrastructure and spaces for the storage of artworks.

As an administrative partner for gallery operations, this manager executes tasks such as:

  • Hiring and scheduling of student staff, independent contractors, and temporary employees.
  • Departmental purchasing.
  • Payrole/timesheet oversight.
  • Facilities scheduling.

Seconds the Senior Exhibition Manager in the day-to-day management of gallery and facility operations, including direct on-site supervision of student staff, temporary employees and independent contractors.

Shares responsibility for monitoring catering, security and guests, and for ensuring that occupancy and safety/security procedures are followed.

Maintains and updates training manuals for student staff.

Maintains opening and closing of the gallery as required.

Corresponds with artists for exhibition planning as required.

Participates in department staff meetings as required.

Other duties, as assigned by the Director of Operations and the Senior Exhibition Manager.

Qualifications

Three years of demonstrated expertise and hands on experience in art handling and preparations at the museum level essential. Bachelors degree in fine art, or related field required.

Knowledge of construction techniques, carpentry, and supervisory experience in an academic environment desirable. Teaching experience and/or a demonstrated commitment to hands-on mentoring of students desirable. Gallery lighting design/experience desirable. CAD, Adobe Creative Suite and MAC OS experience highly desirable. Registration experience highly desirable.

Must have strong attention to detail balanced with a creative approach to efficient, expedient problem solving. Should possess excellent oral and written interpersonal skills, patience in an ever-changing work environment, and a team player with the ability to manage multiple tasks/projects on a tight schedule. A can-do attitude and sense of humor are essential.

Some weekend and after-hours work expected as needed.
