The Assistant Curator is responsible for art from 1970 to the present. Primary responsibilities of the position include assisting the contemporary art department’s curators on research, exhibition, interpretation, publication, and development of the permanent collection and temporary exhibitions at LACMA. The Assistant Curator provides support and participates in discussions and presentations about acquisitions; plays a vital role in working across departments such as with Development, Education and Communications and Registration; works collaboratively with artists, educators, collectors, donors, and the public, and helps prioritize and achieve short- and long-range institutional goals. This position represents the Museum locally, nationally, and internationally. The Assistant Curator will engage with and activate the strengths of the collection with an emphasis on research and acquisitions of African American and African diasporic art.
Some responsibilities include: assist with research, development, coordination, and execution of exhibitions; research and write scholarly texts and exhibition collateral (labels, brochures, etc.) related to exhibitions and the collection; participate in the planning and coordination of exhibitions; assist in the development and negotiation of outside loans and exhibition contracts; work with department curators with the development of the collection, including acquisitions, deaccessions, and collections management; work closely with acquisition support groups with artist research, presentations, and execution of council events; develop relations, maintain communication, and coordinate programming with other curatorial departments; assist with grant writing; perform other duties or special projects, as assigned; maintain regular and reliable attendance.
The qualified candidate will have: a master’s degree in Art History, or a related field, with expertise in Contemporary Art (Ph.D. is preferred); a background in African American and/or African diasporic art and culture is preferred; at least three (3) years of museum experience with progressively responsible curatorial experience and demonstrated experience in acquisitions, exhibitions, installation and scholarly publications; experience in Contemporary art, and prior experience with ambitious exhibition and publication programs in a museum; ability to write for a public and scholarly audience, and the ability to work on teams with fellow curators, educators and a range of museum staff, professional colleagues, and museum supporters; a proficiency or fluency in at least one foreign language is preferred; strong public speaking and communication skills; efficiency at multitasking, with a strong ability to manage multiple, concurrent projects and assignments.
