The Elise S. Haas Conservation Department of the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art seeks an Associate Photography Conservator to join their progressive team of experts dedicated to the preservation, conservation, and research of modern and contemporary artworks and artists’ practices. As one of the first American institutions to recognize photography as an art form, SFMOMA’s collection encompasses more than twenty thousand photographs, from daguerreotypes made in the first years of the medium’s existence to digital imagery produced by contemporary artists. As the definition and material of the medium continues to evolve, SFMOMA’s pioneering commitment to photography and its preservation has deepened and expanded with the 2016 addition of the Pritzker Center for Photography and customized Cold Vault. Encompassing fifteen thousand square feet, the center includes enhanced permanent collection galleries and new special exhibition galleries, along with a study center and the Photography Interpretive Gallery.
The Associate Photography Conservator works closely with the Photography Conservator in the oversight of all aspects of conservation of SFMOMA’s world-renowned photography collection. Responsibilities include on-going care of the collection, including examination, conservation treatment, consultation and general collections care as well as involvement with artists and new accessions.
The Associate Photography Conservator works collaboratively with colleagues across the museum. This role actively engages with the Curatorial departments, contributing conservation expertise on accessions, exhibitions, loans, storage guidelines and collections research, In addition to SFMOMA colleagues, the Associate Photography Conservator fosters productive relationships with artists, scholars, collectors, students, donors, the public and with colleagues from other museums.
