
Curator
The curator of SCAD exhibitions, is an essential part of the SCAD Museum of Art senior team and provides support, leadership and vision to all museum areas. Reporting directly to the chiefhead curator, and in close contact with the executive director, the curator will research, and conceptualize, propose, implement, and promote exhibitions primarily for the SCAD Museum of Art in Savannah, but also for all SCAD locations and exhibition venues as required;, participate in the study and of museum collections utilization and collaboratively contribute along with curatorial staff to overall exhibition programming. The candidate will work effectively with all museum and exhibitions department collaboratively with exhibition department staff including producers, art preparators, registrars, museum operations team, as well asand other university departments of the institution to maximize the outreach and impact of the exhibition program and further the mission, vision and values of the university.
The curator will develop proposals for exhibitions, which will include contextual research, as well as conceiving ways in which these exhibitions could enhance the student’s experience; develop exhibition checklists for approved exhibitions; develop production plans; to liaise with galleries and communicate effectively and professionally with prospective artists about exhibition spaces, logistics and deadlines prior to the exhibition; to design exhibition layout and personally oversee layout and installation of exhibitions; prepare talking points and supporting research for museum docents; prepare itineraries and host visiting artists and other guests; and conduct studio visits with artists as needed.
The successful candidate will be a highly motivated professional, able to be an excellent project manager, an outstanding public speaker and a strong advocate for contemporary art. The candidate is expected to develop relationships with SCAD faculty in various departments, fostering dialogue to create shared goals for programming; develop and execute community-based and educational programs to complement major exhibitions; present curatorial talks and tours of exhibitions to the SCAD community, patrons and public; conduct class visits as requested; and network with arts organizations and media as required. The successful candidate would demonstrate an extraordinary ability to plan and implement several exhibitions and programs simultaneously.
