Job Posting Title: Assistant Curator of Collections
Job Description: Assistant Curator of Collections
ABOUT POMONA COLLEGE: Located near Los Angeles, California, Pomona College is widely regarded as one of the nation’s premier liberal arts colleges. Established in 1887, Pomona College is known for small classes, a challenging curriculum, close relationships between students and faculty, and a range of student research and leadership opportunities. Pomona is a member of The Claremont Colleges.
ABOUT THE BENTON MUSEUM OF ART: The soon-to-open Benton Museum of Art is the primary repository for Pomona College’s art collections. Building on the legacy of its previous incarnation (Pomona College Museum of Art), the Benton will also serve as Pomona’s primary site for presenting an ambitious and expanding exhibition program. The Benton’s new building allows for all 15,500 objects in the permanent collection to be housed together for the first time, and its new study room facilities allow for unprecedented access to these holdings, which include approximately 6,000 works of Native American art, 5,000 works on paper-prints, drawings, and photographs-as well as European and American painting and sculpture.
POSITION SUMMARY: The Benton Museum of Art seeks an Assistant Curator of Collections. This position is a full-time, benefits-based position at the recently constructed Benton Museum of Art at Pomona College. The position will be responsible for facilitating access to the College’s permanent collection of more than 15,500 objects through established programs that the museum wishes to expand in the near and longer term. Applicants must demonstrate a commitment to providing access to art collections for students in different stages of learning; researchers; and interested members of the general public. Other essential skills include a strong background in art history and familiarity with art handling; comfort with engaging individuals and groups in a museum setting; and curiosity to conduct research across the broad range of permanent collections holdings housed at the museum.
In addition to participating in the established and expanding Native American Outreach Program, the successful candidate will collaborate with members of museums staff, faculty, and students to develop research projects and exhibitions related to the collections. The position will report to the Senior Curator and will work closely with the Director and Associate Director/Registrar.
