The Art Gallery of Alberta is seeking statements of interest for an Adjunct Curator of Indigenous Art
Located in Treaty 6 territory, the Art Gallery of Alberta is the oldest cultural institution in Alberta and the province’s only solely dedicated art museum. Located in the City of Edmonton, the AGA serves the local community, the province of Alberta and plays a significant role in the cultural life of Western Canada. The AGA maintains a collection of over 6,000 works of art and presents an annual series of temporary and collection-based exhibitions with related educational, public and outreach programs.
Reporting to the Executive Director / Chief Curator, the Adjunct Curator of Indigenous Art will contribute to the advancement of the AGA’s exhibition schedule, focusing primarily on the programming of work by contemporary and Indigenous artists. The AGA is seeking a bright voice in contemporary curating, and will be looking for candidates with original and critical thinking as well as innovation in exhibition conception and realization. The ideal candidate will bring an eagerness to work collaboratively with AGA teams, Indigenous communities, artists and external stakeholders. Assisting with the development, interpretation and presentation of the AGA exhibitions and collections, the Adjunct Curator of Indigenous Art will further public knowledge and understanding about Indigenous art and build audience engagement and awareness about the critical importance of contemporary Indigenous art and artists.
Qualifications
Candidates should have a university degree with specialized knowledge of Indigenous art, and three-five years of experience in art historical research in Indigenous art and/or work in a museum or art gallery context. Candidates should also have an understanding of contemporary art with a Canadian and international context. The successful candidate will have knowledge about exhibition planning and development, excellent organizational and research skills, an ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing, and the ability to work in a team environment.
This is a 12-month, part-time, adjunct position open for residents of Edmonton.
