Curatorial Assistant, Korean Art

Under general supervision, provides curatorial assistance and administrative support to the Curator of Korean Art in programs and projects related to the Korean Art department, including research, cataloging, acquisition, conservation, education, exhibition, registration, and publication. The nature of the work requires maximum flexibility, resourcefulness, and initiative in addition to excellent interpersonal and organizational skills.
EXAMPLES OF DUTIES:
- Assists with the maintenance and documentation of the departmental collection; assists in the classification, description, and interpretation of artworks; conducts research for identifying and interpreting the objects; writes interpretative and informational labels, brochures and other related materials as required; assists in the research and preparation for acquisitions and donations; updates and organizes files.
- Assists in planning, developing and organizing exhibitions; assists in supervising the preparation and installation of artworks; coordinates administrative details of exhibitions as required.
- Responds to request for information about objects; conducts tours of the Korean art collection for visitors; answers correspondence related to Korean art.
- Prepares and maintains operational and budget records of departmental activities; assists the curator and Development department in grant proposal writing and maintaining relationship with supporters.
OTHER FUNCTIONS:
Performs other related duties as assigned.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
- Advanced degree, or working towards advanced degree, in Korean or Asian Art History or East Asian Studies; strong research skills in Korean history and art history.
- Excellent written and oral communication skills in English; strong organizational, planning, research, and presentation skills; good administrative skills.
- Demonstrated high level proficiency in Korean and knowledge of Korean art and history.
- Ability to work independently and to exercise initiative and good judgment.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with staff, visitors, volunteers, and donors.
- Passionate for art and Korean culture. Awareness of delicate and irreplaceable objects of art in the museum and other collections.
- Computer proficiency; knowledge of MS Office as well as photography and graphic editing skills.
- Detail-oriented, meticulous, and conscientious in following through on assigned tasks.
