This position is located on the staff of the Chief Curator (C), Department of Modern and Contemporary Art (CMC). The incumbent serves as a curator, reporting to the senior curator and head of the department, and is responsible for the development, presentation, interpretation, related research, and care of aspects of the Gallery’s collection of paintings and sculpture from 1900 to the present, primarily in the areas of African American and African-diasporic art.

Art Historical Research, Interpretation, and Programs:
Performs advanced scholarly art historical research on the CMC collection and on prospective acquisitions and loans. Pursues broader research in areas of expertise for inclusion in studies, scholarly journals, Gallery publications, lectures, symposia and colloquia, or exhibitions. Consults sources in English and in other languages.
Exhibitions:
Proposes, organizes, and coordinates exhibitions of modern and contemporary art that draw from the Gallery’s holdings, as well as from other institutions and private collections. Coordinates with the departments of Exhibitions, Content Strategy/Publishing, Conservation, Registrar, and Design and Installation to meet exhibition production schedule deadlines, under the direction of the Senior Curator.
Collection & Donor Development:
Leads initiatives or supports the expansion and deepening of the Gallery’s collections of African American and African-diasporic art through the acquisition of works of art of the highest quality and relevance to the Gallery’s collecting policies.
Collection Management:
Participates in the management of CMC collections, including paintings, sculpture, mixed media, and new media owned by and on loan to the Gallery.
Public Service and Collegiality:
Provides accurate and informative responses to inquiries from outside scholars, colleagues, and the public concerning works in the collection or other requests in areas of expertise.
