The British Museum is seeking a Head of Conservation to join the Collection Care department. The main purpose of this role is to deliver a major contribution, to the care, preservation and delivery of public access to the collection and lead the conservation team in supporting the Museum’s operating plan and relevant strategies.
Key Areas of Responsibility:
- To lead, plan, manage and deliver Conservation’s contribution to the preservation of the Collection and public access activities (exhibitions, loans and gallery refurbishment)
- Formulate and advocate Conservation’s contribution to Collection Care strategy, Conservation Policy and the Operational Plan.
- Conceive and develop research, and conservation, projects participating in commercial and income generating activities such as international loans, consultancy and training.
- To maintain and develop the expertise, practice and reputation of the conservation team through staff development research lectures and publication.
- Represent the Conservation team, and the Museum, globally by contributing to professional debate and strengthening relationships with external professional bodies, educational institutions and colleagues/partners.

Person Specification:
- Educated to at least undergraduate degree level in conservation or equivalent experience and evidence of publishing within field of expertise.
- Experience as a Conservation Manager and working in a large and complex organisation as well as being a member of relevant professional organisations.
- Recognised international expert within field of expertise and has an active engagement with Health and Safety issues.
- Strong understanding of developing strategy, budget management, resource planning and organising and prioritising in a complex environment.
- An excellent communicator, both verbally and written, who is able to lead, motivate, influence and engage with colleagues and the public.
