The Corporation of the Fine Arts Museums (COFAM) is excited to offer four (4) fellowship positions, each with a term of two years. These roles are part of an ongoing priority to meaningfully expand our professional development opportunities for aspiring museum professionals of all backgrounds and to our commitment in making FAMSF a more diverse, accessible, and inclusive institution.
The purpose of these Fellowships is to train emerging professionals from diverse backgrounds in the practice of researching and cataloguing works of art: the compilation of provenance, exhibition history, and bibliographic references, as well as documenting critical opinions. These skills are the foundation of art-historical knowledge and are essential elements of curatorial practice.
The Fellows will work closely with the Registration and Collections Management team and will be matched with one or more of FAMSF’s eight curatorial departments: Achenbach Foundation for Graphic Arts; Arts of Africa, Oceania and the Americas; American Art; Ancient Art; Contemporary Art; Costume and Textile Arts; European Decorative Arts and Sculpture; and European Paintings. Where possible, departmental assignments will be based on areas of interest and expertise and fellows will work directly with multiple curators, who will serve as supervisors and offer mentorship throughout the fellowship. Fellows will provide assistance with the ongoing work of analyzing existing collections data and prioritizing data clean up. The position will provide training in the TMS (The Museum System) database that is used throughout the museum world. Building on their collections information research, fellows will have the opportunity to undertake an independent project in consultation with their supervisors and mentors.
Position Details:
This is a full time, 40 hour per week position that is non-exempt (eligible for overtime pay) with an hourly rate of $26.44, equivalent to $55,000 annually. This position is grant funded for a two year fixed-term, and includes a generous benefits package, along with a nominal travel stipend.
The Fellowship has a fixed-term of two years, running from September 2021 to August 2023 (there is some flexibility with dates based on candidate availability), and is open to individuals who have recently completed a graduate degree (or international equivalent) in Art History, Museum Studies or related field. We will consider candidates who have completed their bachelor’s degree, who also have curatorial experience or other relevant museum experience. A preference may be given to applicants with some background in cataloguing or experience with TMS (The Museum System), but this is not deemed essential.
