LSU Museum of Art seeks a Curatorial Fellow for a two-year curatorial practice fellowship. The position is intended for art history post-graduates with a focus on African American art. The Fellow will be an integral part a small curatorial team and will gain experience through exhibit and program development and coordination, acquisition research, interpretation of the collection. The Fellow will assist with current projects and develop a new exhibition and new programs. The Museum seeks an effective communicator committed to Diversity, Equity, Accessibility, and Inclusion principles and eager to collaborate on DEAI initiatives.
This position is a two year appointment.

Job Responsibilities

Exhibitions Coordination: Assist with coordination of in-house, traveling, and borrowed exhibitions including checklists, installation, label production, and interpretive materials. Assist with packing, transportation (including driving), preparation, handling, and installation of art. Assist with coordination and tracking of traveling exhibitions program including communication, invoices, shipping arrangements, loan and participation agreements. (35%)

Curatorial Interpretation: Assist with interpretation of permanent collection and exhibitions through in-gallery interpretive texts and technology, public program development and facilitation, and exhibition development. Assist with interpretive and publication projects including coordination, communication, research, writing, proofreading, and editing. Conceive and develop one exhibition during 2-year term. Collaborate on DEAI initiatives for exhibitions and programs. (25%)

Acquisitions: Assist with research and identification of potential acquisitions with a focus on underrepresented artists. Attend Collections Committee meetings and prepares documentation and meeting set up. (15%)

Registration: Assist Registrar by assigning storage locations to new acquisitions; tracking and records movement of objects. Coordinate packing and shipping arrangements for new acquisitions. Complete condition reports for permanent collection and incoming and outgoing loans. (15%)

Collection Care: Assist with annual inventory of permanent collection; reconcile discrepancies; updates database. Maintain the cleanliness of collections storage. Monitor environmental conditions (light levels, temperature, and relative humidity) of the exhibition and storage areas. (5%)

Requirements

Minimum Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in Art History, Museum Studies, African American Studies, or related field.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Completed Master’s degree and/or Doctoral work in Art History and 1+ years of museum exhibition or collections experience.
  • Demonstrated scholarship in art history with focus on African American art. Museum collections care or exhibition installation experience.
  • Experience with Past Perfect Database.
  • Experience working with public programs.

Special or Physical Qualifications

Ability to drive 15-passenger van or small truck with lift gate for long distances. Ability to bend, stoop, squat, and to consistently lift up to 50 pounds. Ability to climb ladders and scaffolding and work on high lifts. Willingness to work night and weekend hours if needed.

Certifications/Licenses
Valid driver’s license – This position requires a current Class “E” driver’s license
