
Chief Curator
SCAD seeks a Chief Curator to oversee and create compelling modern, contemporary art and design exhibitions that position SCAD as a vital voice in international contemporary culture. The Chief Curator will work closely with the Executive Director and the curatorial team to conceive, plan and present internationally-recognized programming and provide curatorial direction and organizational leadership at SCAD locations in Savannah and Atlanta, Georgia; Lacoste, France; and off-site locations. Most significantly, the Chief Curator is responsible for the programming strategy of the SCAD Museum of Art.
In this role, you will provide leadership to the curatorial team in conceptualizing exhibitions with visiting artists, SCAD artists and using the permanent collection, working in a collegial manner to build trust and respect in a team-centric department. You will foster collaborative interdepartmental relationships to maximize the outreach, impact and visibility of the university’s dynamic exhibitions program. You will develop budgets and their priorities in support of programming goals. The Chief Curator is the lead spokes-person for SCAD visual art exhibitions and the SCAD Museum of Art permanent collection and must be at ease in a highly visible and public position.
The ideal candidate must have extensive knowledge of standard museum curatorial practices, exhibition development and logistics. You also have an outstanding national and international exhibition and publication history, an established international network, management and supervisory experience, and excellent skills in research, writing and communication. You will have the capacity to multitask and deal effectively with deadlines. You should be organized, proactive, flexible with excellent analytical, problem solving and interpersonal skills. Demonstrated ability to build relationships with other institutions, artists, donors, collectors, gallerists and curators is essential
Requirements
– Master’s degree in art history required, Ph.D. preferred
– Eight to ten years of related experience, training, or equivalent combination
– Must be able to travel as needed to advance curatorial projects and other institutional initiatives and represent SCAD at major art world events globally.
– Valid driver’s license
