The Woodstock Byrdcliffe Guild is a regional center for the arts located in Woodstock, New York. From its 250-acre mountainside campus and its arts and performance center in the village of Woodstock, Byrdcliffe offers an integrated program of exhibitions, performances, classes, workshops, symposia, and artists’ residencies. Byrdcliffe was founded in 1902 and has operated as a nonprofit organization since 1938.

Department: Woodstock Byrdcliffe Guild Kleinert/ James Center for the Arts

Reports to: Executive Director

Status: Part Time, Salaried

Schedule: Four days a week (some weekends) with opportunity to expand to Full Time

Location: Kleinert/ James Center for the Arts

The Kleinert/James Center for the Arts, located in the center of Woodstock, is one of the best intimate event spaces in the region. Renovated in 2006, the fifteen hundred square foot space is a gallery, concert hall, and celebration venue.

Job Summary:

The Exhibitions Director will manage planning, marketing, and implementation of six to seven gallery exhibitions per year, including ‘5 by 7’ fundraising show. Execute artist contracts, loan agreements, insurance documentation, exhibition production (curatorial text, checklists, labels, handouts); schedule and manage contracted and volunteer exhibition installers and gallery prep personnel; receive, document, unpack and pack incoming and outgoing artwork; exhibition marketing and design orders; introduce artists/curators participating in public gallery talks; coordinate hospitality and volunteers for receptions; collaborate with Operations Manager on gallery rentals; administer exhibition funding raised by development team; cultivate exhibition sponsors.

Field queries regarding Byrdcliffe’s permanent collection of early 20th-century arts and crafts, paintings, works on paper; produce outgoing loan agreements and deeds of gift; update Artsystems collections database and HVVACC database as needed.

Write and distribute press releases, mass emails, and website content for exhibitions and programs including performances, classes, workshops, and other events as needed; communicate website updates to webmaster; place and approve orders with graphic designer for all program-related printed materials and advertisements; produce weekly social media posts.

Attend and contribute to Programs and Exhibitions Committee meetings, assisting in Committee selection of exhibition proposals and programs; meet with curators, artists, performers; review, present, and respond to incoming exhibition proposals; edit text provided by curators, performers, and submissions for distribution.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Knowledge of best practices for handling and packing of artwork
  • Interest in the visual arts and history of Woodstock
  • Experience installing and administering exhibitions
  • Ability to manage projects independently and as part of a team
  • Excellent research and writing skills, including press releases and web content
  • Strong editing skills
  • Public speaking experience (moderating panel discussions, introducing artists, curators)
  • Strong organizational skills, excellent attention to detail, and ability to follow through on multiple priorities
  • Ability to lift 30 pounds and climb ladders
  • Mac and Windows proficiency
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office; collections management database software; social media; email marketing software, image management tools
  • Curating and art-writing experience will each be considered a big plus but not required.
