How You Will Contribute
The Philadelphia Museum of Art seeks candidates for a two-year fellowship with the possibility for a one-year renewal in the Department of Prints, Drawings, and Photographs [PDP]. Funded by the Horace W. Goldsmith Foundation, this fellow will work primarily with the museum’s distinguished permanent collection of photographs and will participate in all aspects of curatorial work in the PDP department. Specialists in the history of photography and related fields are invited to apply. We will review applications on a rolling basis starting June 1, 2021.
Specifically, you will:
- Provide general curatorial support to the Curator of Photographs – cataloging and researching photographs, managing related data entry, assisting with loans, supporting gallery rotations, responding to inquiries about the collection, and monitoring the Works on Paper Study Room.
- Manage an ongoing project to assess a collection of more than 20,000 photographs by the American photographer Carl Van Vechten. The collection includes portraits of many leading African American intellectuals, writers, performers, musicians, and visual artists of the 20th century.
- Assist with future exhibitions and publications, including as lead organizer for one exhibition.
- Research and write on proposed photography acquisitions for the PDP collection.
- Coordinate internal projects with conservators, the collections manager, the object photography studio, volunteers, and other stakeholders.
Your background include:
- Advanced graduate degree in art history or another humanities field is preferred.
- A demonstrated commitment to scholarly research and an ability to work collaboratively.
- Prior experience in a museum environment or similar art institution.
Technical proficiency with personal computers and Microsoft Office suite
Excellent writing and communication skills - Prior experience with collection management software, The Museum System (TMS) is preferred.
