
Curatorial Research Associate, Provenance
The Museum of Fine Arts seeks a part-time research associate who wishes a deeper familiarity with research related to the history of ownership of works of art and the research tasks of a curator. Working under the curator for provenance, the research associate will have the opportunity to learn first-hand about provenance research at an encyclopedic museum. The successful candidate will refine his or her research skills but is expected to be familiar with art historical research tools and methods before beginning. The successful candidate will also be mature, organized, detail-oriented, adept with technology and administrative tasks, and will have a demonstrated interest in art museum work.
Responsibilities
- Compiling and entering data related to works of art in the museum collection (with a focus on Dutch and Flemish paintings, sculpture, and decorative arts).
- Researching, formatting, and fact-checking provenance information for hard-copy files, the MFA collections database, and online records.
- Researching and entering data related to collectors, commercial galleries, and prior owners of works of art.
- Organizing images of marks of ownership on the backs and undersides of works of art.
- Assisting with daily administrative and technological tasks as needed.
Qualifications
- BA in art history or related field. Enrollment in, or recent completion of, a graduate program in art history is preferred.
- Prior curatorial work experience in an art museum (paid or volunteer).
- Substantial experience using libraries to research European art.
- Reading knowledge of at least one European language (German, Dutch, or French preferred).
- Familiarity with art historical research methods.
- Exceptional organizational skills.
- Ability to commit to a regular schedule of two and a half seven-hour days per week for a year.
This is a one year term position, with the potential of extension, funding permitting.
