Curator Fee: $5,000
Workman Arts is seeking a guest Curator (or team of Curators) to develop and curate a small group show of visual art/multimedia work as part of Being Scene 2022. We are looking for proposals that speak to the current social climate as it relates to mental health and/or addictions and continues to celebrate Workman member artists and artists with lived experience. Workman Arts supports proposals that offer to showcase artists’ most recent endeavours as well as works that incite conversation and promote a range of intersectional narratives. We are also encouraging proposals to outline ideas of how the group show can be exhibited as an in-person exhibition and/or virtually.
History of Being Scene:
The Being Scene exhibition began over 20 years ago on the grounds of the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health (CAMH). Every year, Being Scene exhibits a juried survey of over 100 artworks by Workman Arts member artists as well as artists with lived experience who have received services from CAMH. Last year, Workman Arts introduced a smaller curated exhibition as part of the overall exhibit. Working closely with a guest curator, artists gave shape to compelling ideas and narratives, covering a wide range of conceptual and material approaches from diverse experiences. Due to the pandemic the exhibition was completely virtual. The exhibition space for Being Scene 2022 has not been chosen, however in the past Being Scene was shown in spaces such as The Gladstone Hotel, Toronto Media Arts Centre [TMAC] and at CAMH Going forward, Being Scene will continue to thrive in local spaces and online.
