About the Minnesota Marine Art Museum (MMAM):
The Minnesota Marine Art Museum, also known as MMAM, is a 501(c)3 nonprofit art museum and education center that opened on July 27, 2006, attracting both regional and national attention. The impetus for building MMAM was to make the Winona area a nationally recognized center for arts and culture and to build on the robust educational systems of the greater region.
MMAM’s mission is to engage visitors in meaningful visual art experiences through education and exhibitions that explore the ongoing and historic human relationship with water. The museum’s vision is to be a resource valued and supported by the region and recognized nationally as a unique visual art institution dedicated to community engagement and the exhibition, preservation, and interpretation of great art inspired by water.
The initial collections consisted of a substantial collection of traditional marine paintings. The museum expanded the quality and diversity of its collections year after year, adding an ambitious roster of educational programs and temporary exhibitions. Today, the MMAM is a dynamic and surprising experience for tens of thousands of visitors. 2019 saw MMAM’s best annual attendance of nearly 36,000 guests.
MMAM is one of the most significant mid-sized art museums in the Midwest, boasting one of the strongest collections of American art in Minnesota. A long-standing relationship with prolific collecting partners has resulted in an ever-growing collection on permanent loan, which includes historically significant works such as Emanuel Leutze’s iconic Washington Crossing the Delaware formerly installed in The White House. Other artists in the collection include Van Gogh, Picasso, Monet, Morisot, O’Keeffe, Audubon, and contemporary regional artists including Adam Turman, Mary Solberg, Annie Hejny, and more.
