Curatorial Researcher (Herbert Read Project)
Do you have a passion for 20th century British Art History? Have you experience of researching 20th century British Art, documenting historic art collections and delivering exhibitions? Can you help us expose and promote our exhibitions to a wider national and international audience?
The Stanley & Audrey Burton Gallery offers innovative art exhibitions and displays treasures from the University Art Collection and the University Library Special Collections. We support opportunities for researchers, students and the general public to understand and appreciate our shared historical legacy, through preserving, researching and promoting our collections.
You’ll lead the research for and help deliver the digital exhibition project ‘Herbert Read: A Legacy in British Art History,’ linking artworks and archives in the University collection, as well as externally. This project seeks to better understand artworks bequeathed by Benedict Read, many of which belonged to his father, art historian Sir Herbert Read (1893-1968) – a key advocate and promoter of modern art in Britain. Linking with the Herbert Read collection in Special Collections, these artworks can tell the fascinating story of Read’s artistic connections and collecting interests. This role includes carrying out curatorial research (on site and externally), enhancing artwork catalogue records (using KE Emu), creating exhibition interpretation, supporting the Curator to deliver the virtual exhibition, as well as supporting exhibition marketing, events, community engagement and evaluation. You’ll be a point of contact for enquiries and advice on the project and liaising with partner organisations.
This project is partly supported by the Henry Moore Foundation.
