The British Museum is seeking an experienced curator and researcher to lead on the curation, development and research of the Americas collection, with a specialisation in either South or North America.
The Curator: Americas Collection will line manager and lead other Americas curatorsand will work directly to the Keeper, assisting in the management of the Department of Africa, Oceania and the Americas overall as appropriate.
Key Areas of Responsibility:
- To raise money for, and lead, major research projects on, and beyond, the American collections including projects involving external partners and Indigenous communities
- To make the American collection publicly accessible via high-profile publication, digital, display, and broadcast projects
- To contribute significantly to the management of the Museum,
- Direct the Santo Domingo Centre for Excellence in Latin American Research
- Lead on building and sustaining relations with other institutions globally and Indigenous communities
- Manage and oversee up-grading the documentation of the American collection
- To lead on improving the display of the American collection, and contribute to the display of the Museum’s collection as a whole, both on- and off-site
- To lead the generation of significant income
- To act as a high-profile advocate for the Museum
- To build the American collections through acquisition via major donations and purchases
- To work as a leading team member with colleagues across the Museum, leading working parties and committees
Person Specification:
Education: degree in Anthropology, Archaeology or related subject; specialisation in the Americas.
Other qualifications: extensive field experience in the Americas, in relation to indigenous communities; fluency in a language spoken in the region.
Specific technical/professional skills & experience: experience or demonstrable knowledge of indigenous Americas collections.
Specific managerial skills: experience of project management and staff supervision.
Specific interpersonal skills: excellent teamwork, good verbal and written communication skills.
Publications record: own academic publications in Anthropology, Archaeology or related subject.
