Primary Purpose of Organizational Unit

Admission to the Ackland is free and accessible to all. The Ackland’s holdings include more than 18,000 works of art. The collection spans all cultures and time periods, showcasing the breadth of human creativity. A vital teaching resource, the museum’s mission is the art of understanding.
Position Summary
The curatorial assistant works to provide essential administrative and organizational assistance to all facets of the activities of the Curatorial Department at the Ackland Art Museum, including the work of the curators, the registrar, and the preparators. Provides administrative support to the curators and their research endeavors. Assembles and maintains paper curatorial and exhibition files from materials produced by the Registrar and curators. Assists with the document creation, formatting, and management of proposed acquisition forms. Assists with the document creation, formatting, and management of draft exhibition documents like checklists, location reports, labels, image captions, wall texts, and web texts.
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements
High school diploma or equivalency and one year of experience that demonstrates possession of the competencies necessary to perform the work; or equivalent combination of training and experience.
Required Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience
Experience with Microsoft Office Suite, including Word, Excel, and Powerpoint, and image editing software like Photoshop. Excellent written and verbal communication skills. Meticulous attention to detail in document management and record creation.
Preferred Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience
Bachelor’s degree in a humanities field and two years of working in an office environment. Coursework in Art History, Museum Studies, and/or Library Sciences. Prior experience working in a museum or gallery setting. Knowledge of collection management databases. Ability to utilize a variety of research methods and resources.
Special Physical/Mental Requirements
Ability to lift or move up to 25 pounds with or without accommodation.
