Description
The Tufts University Art Galleries are dedicated to the presentation of art and the pressing issues of contemporary arts discourse. They are pedagogical spaces where exhibitions, lectures, performances, and artist residencies converge to animate the intellectual life of the greater university community and beyond.
The University Art Galleries department oversees the exhibition spaces in the Shirley and Alex Aidekman Arts Center on the Medford/Somerville Campus, the galleries at the SMFA at Tufts in Boston, and the Tufts University’s Permanent and Public Art Collection. The Galleries produce three to four main exhibitions each semester between the two campus locations alongside 15-20 curricular-driven installations per year.
The Exhibitions Assistant supports the exhibitions program at the Tufts University Art Galleries and is supervised by the Exhibitions Manager and Curator of Galleries and Programs. The Exhibitions Assistant supports 15-18 exhibition projects per year, including four large-scale exhibitions, numerous curricular, small-scale projects and annual temporary public art installations and will be based at the SMFA galleries. This position supports the Exhibition Manager to recruit, hire, train, schedule, supervise, and mentor Student Gallery Guides for assigned gallery locations. Other responsibilities include supporting the Exhibition Manager in developing and implementing timelines and schedules for staff preparators, coordinating artwork shipments, and supporting gallery communications from internal planning to publicity in print and online formats; also oversees and assistants with in-gallery public programs; and assists in the production of gallery publications.
Qualifications
Basic Requirements:
Knowledge and experience typically acquired by:
- College degree and 1-2 years’ experience in the arts and/or exhibitions work.
Proficient in Adobe Creative Suite, Microsoft Office, and comfortable with AirTable and Asana (project management apps).
Preferred Qualifications:
- BA/BFA/MFA/MA, 2-3 years experience with arts exhibitions or organization.
- An employee in this position must complete all appropriate background checks at the time of hire, promotion, or transfer.
