Job Title: Studio Programs Manager, Learning & Engagement
Job Status: Full-Time, FLSA Exempt
Work Hours: Monday – Friday, 8:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. Some evenings and weekends.

Job Summary: 

Under the general direction of the Associate Director of Learning and Engagement, the Studio Programs Manager is responsible for conceiving, implementing, and managing all studio programs and art making experiences at HoMA. The position oversees programs that utilize HoMA’s collections, lending collection, and special exhibitions as a learning resource for all ages. These programs include all school groups, youth and adult art classes, and any programmatic art making events. Studio programs take place at the Honolulu Museum of Art School campus and at the Museum.

The Studio Programs Manager is a key member of HoMA’s interpretive team, which is also comprised of the Tour Programs Manager, the Interpretive Resource Manager and Coordinator, and HoMA’s curators. Together, they are charged with developing a cohesive and complementary suite of interpretive materials that support the vision and values of the museum.

Minimum Qualifications: 

  • A Bachelor’s Degree in Art Education or related field, at least five years of comprehensive related experience.
  • Previous experience teaching art, developing curriculum, and/or managing an art program.
  • Must demonstrate broad knowledge of art education, object-based learning, and museum practices.
  • Must have the ability to communicate effectively with a diverse population of service users, with demonstrated success in multiple locations and work environments.
  • Experience supervising full-time employees, teaching artists, and part-time staff.
  • Experience coordinating programs, developing lesson plans, originating, implementing and conducting art education programs.
  • Have a commitment to social inclusion and making museums accessible to a wide-ranging audience.
  • Strong computer skills and willingness to learn new programs.

Desired Qualifications:

  • An advanced degree in a related field, such as Art Education, Art History, and/ or Museum Studies.
  • Experience in museum environment or nonprofit organization with multiple sites and varying degrees of need.
  • Working knowledge of current art education pedagogy and HiDOE curriculum.
  • Knowledge of Teaching for Artistic Behavior (TAB) pedagogy and Universal Design for Learning.
  • CPR certified.
  • Understanding of Honolulu Museum of Art’s established identity and dedication to advancing it.
  • Exceptional ability to manage and lead people and build the capabilities of a driven, bright, diverse team, as well as develop a top-notch work and volunteer force.
