Information & Responsibilities

California Institute of the Arts (CalArts) seeks a Chief Curator and Deputy Director, Programs for the 3,000 sq.ft. gallery at the Roy and Edna Disney/CalArts Theater (REDCAT) and to develop the artistic program of REDCAT across its various spaces presenting visual art, performance, dance, theatre, and music, with the Vice President of Cultural Partnerships and Steven D. Lavine Executive Director of REDCAT, and the Deputy Executive Director and Curator.

This full-time, salaried position will further the experimental and innovative vision of REDCAT through development and management of programs across artistic media and platforms. Reporting to the VP of Cultural Partnerships and Steven D. Lavine Executive Director of REDCAT, and working with REDCAT’s Deputy Executive Director and Curator, the position ensures a diverse and innovative program that advances REDCAT’s reputation for multidisciplinary arts practice. The Chief Curator and Deputy Director, Programs is encouraged to develop an inclusive, dynamic, risk-taking, artistic- centered, and intersectional program of performances, exhibitions, commissions, programs, and events that continues to advance REDCAT’s national and international reputation in the field of contemporary arts.

REDCAT, CalArts & downtown center for contemporary arts, is a multidisciplinary center for innovative visual, performing and media arts founded by CalArts in the Walt Disney concert Hall complex of the Los Angeles Music Center in downtown. Through performances, exhibitions, screenings and literary events, REDCAT introduces diverse audiences, students and artists to the most influential developments in the arts from around the world, and gives artists in the region a platform to help them achieve national and international stature. REDCAT furthers the mission of the California Institute of the Arts, its parent organization, by encouraging experimentation, discovery, and lively civic discourse. Requirements

RESPONSIBILITIES

• Develop and oversee REDCAT’s visionary program of art, performance, theatre, dance, and music with VP/Executive Director, and Deputy Executive Director and Curator, to provide an innovative offer focused on experimentation and innovation, with commitment diversity, equity, accessibility, and inclusion.
• Lead and direct programs for the gallery at REDCAT, including exhibitions, commissions and programs; leading research, development and implementation of all aspects of the gallery exhibitions, including production of didactic and exhibition materials; providing overall vision and management for the gallery and related budgets and staffing.
• Develop and manage REDCAT programming calendar and schedule
• Work with REDCAT production, facilities, and external staff to realize artistic programs for various artistic disciplines.
• Produce and oversee didactic and promotional materials as needed.
• Assist in advancement and fundraising initiatives in collaboration with the VP/Executive Director of REDCAT and the Office of Advancement at CalArts.
• Build institutional partnerships and relationships with the arts community in Los Angeles and beyond, including artists, galleries, collectors, and donors, to advocate for REDCAT programs.
• Act as a programming liaison between REDCAT and CalArts’ Schools, including Art, Music, Film/Video, Dance, Theater and Critical Studies (Writing).

Qualifications

REQUIREMENTS:

• Demonstrated engagement with the contemporary arts and global multidisciplinary arts practice.
• Deep knowledge of international developments in both contemporary visual, media, and performing arts.
• Extensive experience with programming, curating, and advocacy of artists and artistic production across formats.
• Experience with administration, management, and fundraising for contemporary culture programs.
• Demonstrated ability working productively with artists within budgetary and time constraints.
• At least five years of programmatic professional experience in the visual arts is desired.
• Working knowledge of at least one foreign language is preferred.
